Osaka Metro has completely abandoned its fleet of 190 electric buses, which were originally imported through a domestic distributor for the 2025 World Expo. The vehicles, contract-manufactured by a Chinese OEM, were plagued by catastrophic safety failures. Drivers and passengers endured severe body swaying, steering malfunctions, and brake failures, culminating in multiple collisions. Government inspections later revealed that over 30 percent of the fleet suffered from severe defects, including ruptured brake hoses and fractured axle structures. The financial fallout is devastating. In its May 2026 financial report, Osaka Metro officially wrote off a massive 6.7 billion yen (approximately 42 million USD) extraordinary loss. Hopes for a refund are virtually nonexistent, as the Japanese distributor collapsed into bankruptcy in April 2026, crippled by the contract termination.
