A moment of happiness at one of our shelters in Southern California last week: Sweet baby Mia celebrated her 1st birthday! Red Cross volunteers have been supporting Mia and her family at the Pasadena Civic Center since they escaped their home in Altadena due to wildfires. Mia’s mom, Rosa Olvera, a single mother of two, was home when she saw the fire spreading to her community. “I fell asleep with the kids, and I woke up choking from the smoke,” she said. “I opened my eyes and saw orange and red through the window.” Firefighters rescued Rosa from her apartment, allowing her to evacuate safely to our shelter. Now, she has a safe place for her family until she can plan her next steps and doesn’t have to worry about food, water, or supplies for her kids. “Blankets, formula, diapers — we’re getting everything we need here,” Rosa said. “The food is good, and they have different things for the girls. Even applesauce and baby food for Mia.” We’re here to support Rosa, her family, and the 680+ people staying in emergency shelters during this challenging time.
