Maybe just maybe we expect our long time “allies” to help themselves. We did not ask for help bombing or participating in this war but we did expect to rely on our allies to allow us to use bases and airfields. This is where we as Americans were betrayed by many of our so called allies. Who cares whether it’s NATO or not! True friends are shown in times of need.

When this is over, the western part of NATO will never be the same. Spain, England, France and Italy have sold us out, as they too often have a history of doing. Eastern European nations are the heart of NATO. They spend money on defense, know how to fight and love the US. France particularly deserves fault and blame. From supporting China and Russia at the UN to denying Americans overflight rights, they’re doing what they’ve always done - showing weakness, while cutting deals with terrorists. (The reason the US has a Marine Corps and Navy is unlike France, we refused to pay a ransom to the Barbary Pirates. France is always happy to cut a deal.) Wars have unintended consequences as nations show their true colors. NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause.

In een gezonde democratie is controle van de overheid essentieel. Daarom hebben we dat in Nederland ingebouwd in onze staatsinrichting. Naast de Eerste en Tweede Kamer, hebben ook de Raad van State, de @Rekenkamer en de Nationale ombudsman een adviserende en controlerende rol ten opzichte van het kabinetsbeleid. Zij vormen samen de Hoge Colleges van Staat. In een notendop: de Raad van State adviseert de regering onder andere over de juridische haalbaarheid van alle wetsvoorstellen en behandelt het hoger beroep in geschillen tussen of met overheden, de Rekenkamer controleert of we het belastinggeld op de juiste manier uitgeven en de ombudsman komt op voor burgers die door de overheid in de knel zijn geraakt. Vanmiddag hadden we een gezamenlijke kennismakingssessie met het kabinet, vicepresident Thom de Graaf (RvS), president Pieter Duisenberg (ARK) en Nationale ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen. Goed en nuttig om elkaar te leren kennen, want samen zorgen we voor een slagvaardige, betrouwbare en voorspelbare overheid.
