I can remember when someone close to me sent me 5k, as per “my friend is broke, let me assist her” kind of vibe. I was genuinely happy. I had plans of going out two days later, and now I have TP. Thank God. Two days later, I dressed up and left my house. I had like 1k on me, so I told myself I’d withdraw the 5k on my way back, buy a few things, then pay my fare home. Time to go home, I stopped at a nearby POS stand. Me: “Withdraw 5k, but no charges, abeg. Take the charge from the money you’ll give me.” POS guy: “No problem.” I entered my pin… a few seconds later.. Insufficient funds. I was confused. Maybe GTBank don collect their usual charges. I told him to try 4k. Still insufficient funds. At this point, I was panicking. Embarrassed. I started thinking, was it in my dream that my friend sent me 5k? Or I didn’t see clearly? I quickly opened my message app, and there it was, "Credit alert: 5,000." So what happened? I opened my mobile app, and there it was: VAT charges. SMS alert charges. WEB PUR GOOGLEPLAY Lagos NG. I had less than 3k. Did I cry? Yes. Silently.
