The competitors worked through multiple realistic scenarios that could be observed in a chemical plant along with an objective to complete within a given timeframe. Each team’s score is based upon both the profitability and the safety of the unit during the simulated run.

Four students went to the AIChE Annual Student Conference to compete in the ChemE-Sports competition.

Several students from Dr. Ramsurn’s research group go to the conference and two of the undergrads took first place in the poster and presentation competitions: “Dr Hema Ramsurn had several of her research students attend the national meeting for AIChE in Phoenix, AZ.

The competition was based on safely and optimally operating an advanced computer simulation of a Distillation Unit through a combined virtual reality and industrial-style Distributed Control System.
