The Serpentine Column at Delphi's Temple of Apollo was erected to celebrate Greek victory over Persian forces during the Battle of Plataea. The one seen here is a replica, as the original was relocated by Constantine to present day Istanbul.

The Great Church of St. James (Sint-Jacobskerk) was founded in the 13th century with construction on the present-day building occurring during the 14th and 16th centuries. Its hexagonal tower stands around 300 ft tall providing panoramic views of The Hague.

Oostpoort (East Gate) of Delft This elegant city entrance was constructed around the year 1400 with the new enhancements to its towers in 1510 and a modern restoration in 1964. Interestingly enough, it now serves as a private residence.

Tomb of William the Silent Also called William the Orange, this Dutch leader was born on April 24th of 1533. He is known for his role in the revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs at the beginning of the Thirty Years War which would lead to his assassination in 1584.

Saint Patrick's Well consists of a double helix staircase that descends over 170 ft into the earth. Inspired by the legends of Saint Patrick's Purgatory (Ireland), it was commissioned by Pope Clement VII during the 16th century as a secure water source for the town of Orvieto.

Leiden was the town the pilgrims set sail from all those years ago. It is the birthplace of artist Rembrandt. John Quincy Adams also lived here while attending the local university. And yes, I did climb that windmill.
