When your miter saw isn’t cutting perfectly square, you usually have to adjust the fence, make a test cut, check it, and repeat the process. Getting it perfectly dialed in can take more time than you might expect. I saw this method somewhere on social media, and I thought it was very clever and practical. What I really like is that it makes it much easier to set the angle in one shot. I don’t know who originally posted this idea, so if anyone knows, I’d appreciate it if you could mention them.

A Dutchman repair is a traditional method of replacing a damaged section of wood with a matching wooden patch. In this case, I cut the damaged corner into a clean triangular shape, then made a slightly oversized patch to match it. After gluing it in place, I trimmed the excess and planed or sanded it flush with the surface. If you choose a piece with a similar grain pattern, the repair can become almost invisible, just like in this video. Tools used: Saw and chisel by @templetoolco

I’ve made several marking gauges over the years, and one thing became clear: a built-in scale is essential. One issue I kept running into was the locking mechanism. Tightening a screw directly against the wooden body eventually leaves dents, making fine adjustments more difficult over time. That’s why this version locks onto the steel ruler instead of the wood, creating a more durable and reliable design. To make that possible, I had to modify the ruler slightly. Since it was inexpensive, I didn’t mind cutting it. One of my previous versions also used a ruler, but both the ruler and the locking screw were mounted on the side, which made the construction much more complicated. This time, I switched to a simpler and more conventional top-locking layout. The decorative joint is purely for aesthetics. I combined contrasting wood species to create a distinctive look. I also rounded the upper edges so the body feels more comfortable in the hand. For this version, I used a nail as the marking point. However, I usually prefer marking with a pencil, so I plan to remake the front section as a pencil holder. Materials: Bubinga & Oak P.S. The joint isn’t press-fit. I recently came up with a way to make a tapered round tenon, so I decided to try it. For this method, I used a simple jig made from PVC pipe. The cut PVC pipe has enough flexibility to hold wooden dowels approximately 31–34 mm in diameter with the size I used. The jig was mounted at a 3° angle relative to the dowel’s axis. By rotating the dowel and gradually feeding it into the router bit, I created a taper with an included angle of approximately 6°. The taper angle can also be adjusted by changing the mounting angle of the jig. This method can be used to make a tapered round tenon. However, since I did not have a way to make a matching tapered hole, I used it as a tapered plug in a straight-sided hole this time. The narrow tip makes it easy to insert, and it becomes tighter as it is driven in. After trimming it flush, it created a clean wooden plug with very little visible gap. I’ll share the detailed jig-making process in another video.

I don’t have a table saw, so I usually use my homemade circular saw rip-cut jig for deep grooves like this. Its maximum cutting depth is about 65 mm, but maintaining accuracy becomes more difficult as the groove gets deeper. So this time, I used a router table instead. A router leaves rounded inside corners, so I also rounded the ends of the mating pieces to match. It is slightly different from a traditional version, but this method can still be used to make a castle joint.

I wondered if cutting a PVC pipe in half could make a good substitute for a joint fastener, so I decided to give it a try. Previously, I made a similar version using the round cutouts left over from a hole saw. A regular nut worked fine for that design, but this time there wasn’t enough room to fit a wrench inside the PVC pipe, so I used a coupling nut instead. The result worked surprisingly well. Even common materials can be surprisingly useful with a little creativity.

I was truly amazed when I saw @werksatelier’s Instagram post featuring this unique hinge. I really wanted to try the mechanism for myself, but it was difficult to find a suitable thick-walled metal pipe like the one used in the original project. So I decided to start with PVC pipe, which I often use in my projects. Figuring out how to make it took quite a bit of trial and error, but I eventually managed to develop my own approach. Since Tobias had already used this hinge for a box, I decided to apply it to a smartphone stand. I think it is a fascinating mechanism in which the hinge itself becomes part of the design. The Strangest Ring Hinge #woodworking

End grain cutting boards are often very expensive, and after making one for the first time, I now understand why. The design I made is probably one of the simpler and easier types of end grain cutting boards. Even so, it required far more steps than I expected. After gluing the wood together, it had to be cut, rotated, rearranged, and glued again. Cutting and flattening the board also resulted in some material loss. The reason for exposing the end grain is that the knife edge moves between the wood fibers rather than cutting directly across them. This provides a gentler cutting surface and also makes knife marks less noticeable.
