TAMU Small Grains Variety Testing Program

Harvest season is approaching quickly. Spring wheat in Brazoria county is starting to dry down while winter wheat heads are starting to show as far north as Hill County. Leaf Rust and Hessian fly reports continue to spread from College Station to Ellis County.

With consistently warm temperatures over the past week, rust continues to spread across the state. Leaf rust has now been reported in 11 counties and stripe rust in 4 counties. This photo is from today near McGregor, TX.

The 2025 High Plains irrigated regional and multi-year summaries are now posted on our website.

Results for our irrigated trial near Plainview are now posted. This is the 2nd highest trial average we have ever had in the state going back to 2005, missing the top mark by just 0.4 bu/ac (Dalhart 2019).

Results for our irrigated trial near Olton are now posted.

Results for our irrigated trial at Dumas are now posted. The average test weight of 62.7 lb/bu are the highest on record for this site going back to 2005, surpassing the previous high of 61.9 set in 2011.

Trial results for our dryland site near Perryton are now posted.

The 2025 Bushland (Dryland) results are now posted. The trial average of 72.2 bu/ac is the highest yielding on record for this site dating back to 2006 and narrowly beating the previous high of 70.3 bu set in 2019.

Trial results from our site near Greenville are now posted. Harvest was delayed due to ongoing rain and some preharvest sprouting was observed in the field.

Forage data from all trials in the Southern Rollings Plains, which includes sites near Eula, Millersview, and San Angelo, are now posted.

Harvest picked up again across many areas of the state this past week after rain delays the week before. The results from our site near Chillicothe are now posted.

Trial results from San Angelo are now posted. Harvest continues to move slowly due to rain across the state.

HRW & SRW trial results from Hillsboro are now posted.

The HRW & SRW variety trial results from McGregor are now posted. Harvest has been moving quickly in the Southern Blackland region but will be slowed after heavy rainfall last night.

The 2025 HRW and SRW variety trial results from Temple are now posted.

Results of the 2025 McGregor Wheat Dual-Purpose trial are now posted. This is the first year having a dual-purpose trial in the Blackland region.

The results of the Castroville HRWW trial, our first winter wheat results of the year, are now posted. The top 3 varieties last year (TX18A001119, High Cotton, and WB4401) all placed in the top 4 this year.
