A client spent $500,000 to avoid paying $200,000 in tax. He bought a loader his business could use. But he bought it to depreciate it. So it sat in a field. Unused. I advised against it. He did it anyway. Bonus depreciation and Section 179 exist for a reason. But the deduction is supposed to follow the business need. Not replace it. If you wouldn't buy it without the tax benefit, the tax benefit isn't a good enough reason to buy it. Zeroing out your tax bill by burning cash on equipment you never touch is a terrible way to build wealth. All that does is move money from your bank account to a field. Spending a dollar to save forty cents is a bad strategy and never worth it.

I have clients come in who make $750k a year with nothing to show for it Some even have credit card debt, debt to the IRS, etc It’s why we always have to start with nailing down cash flow Can’t build towards anything when you spend every dollar you earn Of all the clients I've lost, 90% are from spending issues and can't afford help anymore

A client uploaded a Numbers file. Like many in TaxTwitter, I could’ve thrown a fit. Or publicly thrown the client under the bus. Or acted like I’m smarter than one of the most valuable companies in the world. Instead, I converted the file to .xlsx so my staff can use it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Client was going to mail a payment for state taxes, they said, “drop it in the mail by 4/15 right?”. I said NOOOO! Do 4/13 atleast unless you send it certified

IMO it says a lot about how much crap tax pros have to worry about that two important changes in payment handling--that the IRS (technically) no longer accepts payment by mail, and that the USPS no longer postmarks on the day of receipt--are barely being talked about this tax szn
