@Bangkokboy17 Walking Street originally was a street food festival for one weekend, but it was such a success, they decided to make the street closed off every night, without the tables and chairs. Nothing to do with congestion and accidents.

In 1959, a group of American sailors from a base in Korat visited Pattaya for "Rest and Recuperation" (R&R). They were captivated by the beaches, and word spread quickly through the military ranks.
By the mid-1960s, the U.S. military began utilizing the nearby U-Tapao Airbase. Thousands of GIs flooded into Pattaya every month. To cater to them, the dirt road at the southern end of the beach—then nicknamed "The Strip"—saw a surge of development. Simple bamboo bars, guest houses, and restaurants replaced fishing huts, laying the groundwork for the modern entertainment district.
Until the early 1990s, the street was still open to cars, which led to significant congestion and several accidents involving tourists. In response, the Pattaya City Council decided to close the street to all motorized vehicles from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM (now often until 4:00 AM).
This move officially gave the area its name: Walking Street.
