Still a lot of spread in the 06Z convection-allowing models for the Upper Midwest today. Some are forecasting a messy storm mode with embedded circulations. Others are showing one or two powerful supercells ahead of the line.

*Significant Damaging Wind and Tornado Threat Today across Illinois* - The environment this afternoon and evening will be primed for severe weather across northern Illinois and surrounding areas. A cold front will be moving quickly across Iowa and Illinois later today. Ahead of that front, thunderstorms will develop as soon as 2-3pm, and these will have the potential for all hazards into tonight with significant damaging wind gusts and several tornadoes likely. - Storms will get started around 2-3pm across central and eastern Iowa. These storms will have very large hail potential to start and should transition to potentially tornado-producing storms as they move east and mature. Eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois (along and west of I-39), and Wisconsin will have the greatest tornado risk today from 3pm-10pm, during which a strong tornado could be possible. As these storms progress this evening, they will transition from tornado and large hail producers to significant damaging wind and embedded tornado producers across northern Illinois, and that threat will continue into Chicago tonight and even into northwest Indiana. Storms will move through and exit Illinois after midnight tonight. - Timeline for storms across Illinois will be from 4pm-12am, 5pm-12am for Chicagoland, 3pm-10pm across eastern Iowa, 4pm-12am across Wisconsin, and 8pm-2am for northwest Indiana. - Tornado threat is greatest across northwest Illinois; a significant damaging wind threat is in place for everyone. #ilwx

Id be mistaken not to mention the true potential for at least a few intense tornadoes across northeast Iowa into northern Wisconsin today. Strong low-level and deep-layer shear combined with high instability should support semi-discrete supercells capable of all hazards including strong tornadoes. Fairly streamwise hodographs and effective SRH around 372 m²/s² will favor a tornadic environment for at least a couple of hours before storms grow upscale. #ilwx #iawx

For our group’s first chase under the Tacoma Chasers name, it was a little bit of a rough one in terms of the lack tornadoes, but the structure and lightning show during the event across NE IA and NW IL made up for it very well! #wxtwitter #ilwx #iawx

So close to having a spin-up tor in extreme NW IL Unsuccessful chase, but it helped my storm chasing ego and gave me more determination (previously caught 2 tornadoes on my first 2 chases)

an absolute monster of an HRRR run with long tracked potential tornado producing storms across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Wow #ilwx Timing: 4-8pm

TUESDAY, April 14 – UPGRADE with a STRONG TORNADO risk! The Storm Prediction Center noting that tornadoes may reach EF3 or greater strength in the strongset storms between Dubuque, Rockford and Madison. This includes in the Platteville to Janesville to Freeport stretches as well. If you live in southern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa or northern Illinois, today is *really* a day to remain weather aware. A few dangerous supercells are likely. Baseball-sized hail is also possible. Have multiple ways to be notified of any warnings and be ready to exercise your severe weather plans!

Dangerous day likely ahead for northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin with supercells and clusters firing by evening with all hazards possible in strongest storms. I may chase this, stay tuned and have multiple ways to receive warnings!

The environment tomorrow is favorable for all severe hazards with supercells, especially along the IL/WI border northward. However all of northern IL has a strong environment. Impressively high instability and a potent shortwave moving in will lead to a solid severe risk. Forcing is one of my bigger concerns with this setup as it's not that much. We will see how it goes! #ilwx

Severe weather is forecast to occur in the Chicagoland area tomorrow afternoon and evening. The main threats should be strong tornadoes and large hail. We will have our group's first live stream start once storms get going on the Tacoma Chasers YT channel! #wxtwitter #ilwx

Very interesting first HRRR run for Tuesday with it highlighting northern Illinois with a strong thermodynamic environment for severe storms capable of potentially all hazards. I have many questions regarding this setup as a sfc warm nose and lacking LL shear could stir up issues, will be ironed out in the coming day! #ilwx

Overall just a weird run on 0z HRRR, but it shows 5-6k CAPE over IL before the cap breaks and then explosive development around sundown. Based on trends, the LLJ will significantly increase a couple hours after these storms fire, making them initial hailers, but tornadic later on

A multi day severe weather threat will occur across the Midwest and northern Illinois starting Monday and ending Friday. Multiple shortwaves ejecting out of a western trough will lead to repeating storms and potentially tornados. #ilwx #iawx 🧵

Over the past 48 hours the main trough has slowed and overall trended more amplified with strong WAA leading to high instability. Wish I could chase, but I have school and a fishing tournament to compete In! I'd definitely head for South Central IA for best environment.. #iawx
