My “senior project” required me to: 1. Identify 2-3 potential cities I could move to in the United States 2. Research the cost of an efficiency apartment or a room to rent 3. Research entry level jobs that I was qualified for and what they paid 4. Email the hiring person and ask what traits they look for in who they hire 5. Find the cost of a used car and monthly insurance and maintenance of that car 6. Identify a community college or university in each market and learn about tuition costs and degree plans 7. Prepare a budget assuming $0 in parental support. On my 18th Birthday I got to choose which city and received a one way plane ticket to execute the “senior project” Which city did I choose?

One storytelling tip: Make it timeless. Critics argue that Harry Potter is Star Wars retold with wizards instead of Jedi. Maybe. Except they act like Star Wars was an original. Even George Lucas disagrees: “I had an idea of doing a modern fairy tale. I stumbled across The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I began to understand how I could do this. It was a great gift.” Lucas then rewrote Star Wars to follow the Hero’s Journey. So, you could argue Star Wars is a copy of every story that came before it that follows the Hero’s Journey. It's a silly debate but a lesson in Timeless Storytelling. Every story comes from somewhere. But not every story can be timeless. 3 ways you can tell timeless stories: 1. Pick your category wisely Over the last few years, “web3” rose to fame, had millions of dollars poured into it, and then crashed in a storm of scandal and fraud. Many writers made their entire story about web3. Today, their engagement has fallen off a cliff. It’s not because of bad writing or content. It’s because they tied their story to an idea that isn’t timeless. Examples of timeless categories: • Habits • Health • Wealth • Writing • Mindset • Creativity • Marketing • Happiness • Philosophy • Storytelling Loads more. 2. Focus on the Quest A story isn’t a string of crazy events thrown together. A story is how the people involved in those events changed, diminished, or grew through those events. • I was once this, but now I’m this. • I was once lost, but now I’m found. • I was once trapped, but now I’m free. Stories about transformation, change, and growth never go out of style. 3. Apply the Hero’s Journey to your ideas (or another proven structure) I know. The “Hero’s Journey” sounds so… cliche? So dramatic? Yes, but it’s effective. It gets to the core of the human experience. We come wired to understand the Hero’s Journey. Not to tell stories through it (that takes practice!), but to relate to stories that do it well. • We’re frustrated in ___ situation. • A call to adventure comes through ___. • On that journey we fight ___, overcome ___, realize ___, and become ___. A structure as old as time. That does not mean it’s boring. Quite the opposite. That means it’s timeless. The best structures blend into the story, enhancing it while giving it shape. *** Tldr: When you tell a story, make it timeless in 3 dimensions. • Category • Quest • Structure As Nassim Taleb says: “If you want to be read in the future, make sure you would’ve been read in the past.”

A few reminders as we head into Thanksgiving: -Don't comment on someone's body, even if it looks different than the last time you saw it. -Don't comment on someone's food choices. Those are inside thoughts. -Don't assign moral value to food. You don't need to "earn" pie.

This is Princess Lili'uokalani. She would become the last sovereign ruler of Hawaii. The photo was taken in 1853 when she was only 15 years old. In 1874, Lili'uokalani's brother, David Kalakaua became king, and a few years later, she was named the heir apparent. She spent the next few years building schools for the people of Hawaii. In 1881, Liliuokalani served as regent while the king was away on his tour of the world. When a smallpox epidemic broke out on the island of Oahu, she made the quick decision to close down all its ports, which helped to contain the spread and ended up saving many lives. However, her decision irked many of the wealthy sugarcane plantation owners. In 1891, her brother died, and she became the ruler of Hawaii. Unfortunately, her reign would be very short-lived as a coup led by Sanford Dole (his cousin founded the Dole Food Company) and several other white businessmen and lawyers with the backing of the United States would annex the islands. Two years later, when Lill'uokalani and her supporters attempted to return to power, she was charged with treason and forced to go under house arrest. In order to pardon her supporters, she agreed to yield her power to the United States. "Now, to avoid any collision of armed forces and perhaps the loss of life, I do, under this protest, and impelled by said forces, yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon the facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representative and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the constitutional sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands." She spent the remainder of her life in exile until her death in 1917 at age 79.
