Due to personal commitments including surgical exams, I will sadly not be seeking re-election onto the UKRDC. I've dedicated my life to the BMA over the past two years and unfortunately over the next year I won't have the capacity to do the role justice. 1/6

A few observations: 1. Overwhelming Yes from those who voted 2. Total vote less- I think reflection of a fair number of IMGs choosing not to vote (rather than a No) 3. Does @wesstreeting use the Medical Prioritisation Bill to hold off strikes? And if so- where does that leave pay discussions? Cos the whole saga of “Look we got rid of foreigners” still leaves a truck load of local doctors without jobs. It is a fascinating juncture of the dance between @BMAResidents & @wesstreeting This saga has much yet to play out.

It’s a YES. An overwhelming 93.4% of resident doctors in England have voted for further strike action, giving a clear mandate to continue pressuring the Government on jobs and pay in 2026. The overall turnout was 52.54%. Stay tuned for updates on our next steps.

This is very good news for Scotland. I am grateful to everyone involved in the discussions. This ensures that the progress we are making in NHS recovery can be maintained.

@AliJaneMoore Resident doctor pay is already higher in Scotland (& Wales) than in England, and this deal, which is well deserved, will increase the gap further. See charts. @wesstreeting has no leg to stand on. If he doesn't want to match Ireland or Australia, what about the devolved nations?

Would be interesting to see how resident docs' pay in Scotland will compare with that in England if the Scottish deal is accepted. Could a move north of the border start to look attractive?

Doctors pay still down 21% and deserve restoration Streeting agrees, cannot restore lost pay overnight, wants fair path back @BMAResidents agree (never asked for one go) But proposing 2.5% for ‘26 (all inflation measures above) = real terms cut Isn't going back let alone fair

"On jobs, actually we're not that far apart... We are still some way apart on pay." Health Secretary Wes Streeting gives @annaefoster an update on talks with resident doctors after strike action over the Christmas period.

@fm_researcher @wesstreeting Poor analogy but: If the rate changes, you can switch to a bank with a more competitive rate. With a monopsony employer (NHS), you can't, unlike in private sector jobs. Alternatively you could sell and move. Many doctors are doing that (🇦🇺/🇨🇦/🇳🇿), but then who staffs the NHS?

@Tal_Ellenbogen @wesstreeting Thats life though? When you buy a house the mortgage rate changes. Do you go on strike when the interest rate wasnt the same?

Merry Christmas @wesstreeting. I hope Santa gives you a memory boost and an allergy to hypocrisy. Here’s hoping that in 2026 you put patients, doctors and the taxpayer ahead of your desire to look tough for the tabloids. Yours, A juvenile delinquent
Wes Streeting@wesstreeting

NHS staff are desperate and patients have experienced untold disruption, but the Government refuses to lift a finger to negotiate a compromise to stop further chaos. This is a Government that’s clocked off for Christmas, leaving NHS staff picking up the pieces. Disgraceful.

@g1c2 @wesstreeting And yes this chart is 2023 so is out of date, hence see the charts above for a 2025 version post pay uplifts. But @jburnmurdoch's thread is helpful if you wish to understand the issue.

@g1c2 @wesstreeting Definitely not the only one. Nurses and teachers have faced massive real terms pay cuts too, and of course there are private sector examples. But the average worker has achieved pay restoration (see charts above) and the 2023 Financial Times report below x.com/jburnmurdoch/s…
John Burn-Murdoch@jburnmurdoch

Critics of striking medics argue that everyone is suffering at the moment. But doctors & nurses have had it worse. Recent inflation has taken the average UK worker’s real wages 2.5% below their 2009 level, but earnings are down 13% for nurses and 24% (!) for junior doctors.

@fm_researcher @wesstreeting I committed to a career in Medicine in 2010, many resident doctors did so even earlier. It's a long journey (16-20 years in my field from medical school applications to consultant) so we didn't "know the terms when we signed up". The terms changed, we want them restored.

@g1c2 @wesstreeting I committed to a career in Medicine in 2010, many resident doctor colleagues who did so earlier. Pay should be restored because we don't do less work than 2008, and we are one of the only professions being paid less in real terms than in 2008. The goal is retention of doctors.

@LizOfTheWorld @wesstreeting Hi Liz. We get paid less than in other Anglophone countries, less than in 2008 & our pension value has been cut since 2008 too. Yet we do more work than in 2008, so I'd argue resident doctors deliver excellent value for money. Otherwise why would Aus/CAN/NZ actively recruit us?
