The most frustrating loop in Nigerian HR: You need experience to get hired. You need to be hired to get experience. Sound familiar? We built something that breaks this cycle completely. And it launches very soon. Save this. Share it with someone stuck in the loop.

The HR profession in Nigeria has a pipeline problem that nobody is talking about 1. Universities churn out HRM graduates with zero practical skills. 2. Companies complain they can't find good HR talent and hire what's available. And in the middle?

My first this is to always ask “WHY do you want to do HR”? Then I’ll typically tell them to; - Have a conversation with someone/people who currently work in the role and ask about what they really do. - Understand where HR as a profession is now and the paths to get in. - Take a free/affordable course (NOT A CERTIFICATION) to understand the basic concepts about the course and why it exists and what is expected of people on that career - Volunteer to work with a professional or a company or do an internship Hope this helps.

Quick question for HR folks, & I'd genuinely love your answers. If someone you know wanted to start a career in HR today, what would you tell them to do? I've been thinking about this problem for a long time, & I'm building @TalentFactoryHQ to solve it Please indulge me

Top of mind, Start. Do an evaluation of your current skill set and strongly leverage your transferable skills for entry. Conduct a skill gap analysis and identify the resources you need to close those gaps. Certifications are great for learning and validation, but experience will always teach you more. Join HR groups/communities for mentorship, resources, templates, and real-life case studies. In addition to core technical and interpersonal skills, intentionally develop theses: 1. Emotional Intelligence for navigating difficult and uncertain situations 2. Data-Driven Acumen to translate analytics into insights that solve people/business problems 3. Business Acumen because you can’t make meaningful impact through people if you don’t understand the market you operate in. 4.Digital Literacy because technology is the new oil and it’ll help you streamline and scale HR processes 5. People Advocacy because HR starts with people. Always deliver your role with empathy (not sympathy) and fairness.

Mostly, I advise they take up volunteering/internship roles, take a few courses on udemy, Coursera or LinkedIn and network with professionals in the industry for mentorship or guidance. All these before pursuing major professional courses. And put yourself out there.

If you want to start a career in HR today, here’s a simple, practical roadmap 👇 (1) Start with the basics: You don’t need to master everything, but understand how HR actually works, especially recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, and compliance. (2) Pick a path early because HR is broad. Choose a focus: Talent Acquisition, HR Ops, L&D, or Compensation & Benefits. Clarity helps you grow faster instead of being everywhere and nowhere. (3) Get practical experience ASAP. Maybe volunteer in a startup, church, NGO, etc. Help with hiring, onboarding, admin tasks. At this stage, experience beats certificates. (4) Build strong people skills because HR is more about people than policies. Focus on communication, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, and confidentiality (no “cho cho cho”). (5) Understand the business you are working for: Top HR professionals think like business partners. Learn how companies make money, how teams are structured, and what drives performance. That’s what separates average HR from strategic HR. (6) Build your visibility, show up online (LinkedIn, X, Instagram, etc). Share insights, engage with HR content, and join conversations like this particular tweet. Opportunities often come from visibility. (7) Be patient, but intentional..Entry-level HR is competitive. You may start with admin-heavy roles, but with focus, growth comes fast. Hope this helps. QED
