Should Tamika Catchings have been the first WNBA player to win MVP as a rookie? She remains the only rookie in league history to lead the WNBA in scoring—and she did it while also leading the league in steals. She ranked fourth in rebounds, finished top ten in assists, and led the league in win shares. Drafted to an Indiana Fever team that had gone (9–23) before her arrival, Catchings missed the 2001 season due to a college injury. The Fever struggled again without her, finishing (10–22). When she finally stepped onto the court in 2002, the impact was immediate, as Indiana added six wins and reached the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Despite being the league’s best player statistically and making an immediate impact, Catchings finished third in MVP voting, behind Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie. When you consider that a player like Lauren Jackson would win league MVP a year later despite missing the playoffs, it’s hard not to wonder: should Catchings have claimed MVP as a rookie, given her ability to lead the league statistically while guiding her team to the playoffs for the first time?
