After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. It has been an honor serving under @POTUS and @DNIGabbard and leading the professionals at NCTC. May God bless America.

#Ethiopian president calls for equal access for all states to #Red_Sea, #Indian_Ocean Ethiopia will pursue ‘a comprehensive approach’ to ensure equal development, security for all states along Red Sea and Indian Ocean,’ says Taye Atske Selassie. Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie called Thursday for equal access to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean for all states, citing the seas as the “common heritage” of humanity. “The international law maxim that defines the high seas as a common heritage of mankind and guarantees equal right of access and use to all states must be brought to reality in collaboration with other states,” Selassie told the UN General Assembly in New York. He said no state should be excluded from development opportunities due to geography, echoing remarks in August by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Awaza, Turkmenistan. Selassie vowed that the East African country would pursue a “comprehensive approach” to ensure equal development and security for all states along the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and continue advancing its “legitimate policy objective through diplomacy and peaceful engagement.” He said Ethiopia, as Africa’s second most populous country and one facing significant maritime threats, places high importance on the safety and security of navigation in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. aa.com.tr/en/africa/ethi…

#Ethiopia: “If there is any Ethiopian who believes that Ethiopia will forever remain a geographic prisoner, that person is a dead one,” PM Abiy Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reiterated his government’s position that Ethiopia “must be relieved from the shuttered doors and the isolation” that he believes has contributed to its poverty. He made the remarks at the inauguration of his latest book, Medemer, on Tuesday night. “It is not wise to assume that a country as large as Ethiopia should be handed to our children while encapsulated,” Abiy said while ruling out the prospects of “conflict and war.” However, he said that Ethiopians should not believe in the notion that Ethiopia will remain "a geographic prisoner." News: ‘Robberies, kidnappings, banditry’, and social media use for ‘acts of terror’ top agenda in PM #Abiy’s talks with security leaders Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) held discussions with leaders of #Ethiopia’s security institutions in which the need to control “robberies and kidnappings”, strengthen coordination between the public and security forces, and step up monitoring of social media platforms used for “acts of terror” were among the top areas raised. In a statement released after the meeting, Abiy said the meeting “reaffirmed” that the primary mission of security institutions is to establish peace, which is both “an enabling condition and a primary component for Ethiopia’s prosperity.” While underscoring public efforts rooted in culture and values, he stressed that “the role of security institutions is irreplaceable.” addisstandard.com/?p=52292

#EHRC urges respect for #human rights, calls on #CoHA signatories to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has called on all parties involved in the ongoing conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions—including the federal government and armed groups—to uphold international human rights and humanitarian law and engage in political dialogue to resolve disputes. The call was made during a press briefing held for the release of EHRC’s annual report. Birhanu Adelo, Chief Commissioner of EHRC, urged signatories of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and actions that risk undermining the fragile peace process. “Events and conditions that have hindered the full implementation of the Pretoria agreement and endangered human rights must be corrected,” he said. #Ethiopian: Right to #life in ‘#critical’ state amid #conflicts, service collapse, and #humanitarian crises: Rights Commission Ethiopians right to life is in a “critical” state due to the combined effects of ongoing armed conflicts, natural disasters, and a near-total breakdown of public services, according to the latest annual report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), released today. Covering the period from June 2024 to June 2025, the 152-page report documents extensive violations of fundamental rights, including extrajudicial killings, abductions, physical harm, and widespread destruction of property. Civilians, particularly in conflict-affected areas, remain the primary victims of violence perpetrated by government forces, local armed groups, unidentified assailants, and inter-communal clashes. In Amhara, the EHRC reported continued abuses in the conflict between federal forces and Fano militia, including extrajudicial killings and home burnings by government forces, and retaliatory attacks and looting by Fano. Similar violations were documented in Oromia, where both government forces and OLA militants were implicated in killings, abductions, and infrastructure destruction. OLA fighters reportedly extorted and killed passengers on buses headed to Addis Abeba. The report also cited civilian casualties from armed attacks in Benishangul-Gumuz, Central Ethiopia, and cross-border raids by Murle militants in Gambella. addisstandard.com/?p=51657

#Ethiopia sentences five to #death for human trafficking offenses The Ministry of Justice has announced that five individuals have been sentenced to death for their involvement in human trafficking and illegal border crossings. Belayihun Yirga, State Minister of Justice, told local media that the sentences were handed down under Proclamation No. 1178, which prescribes penalties ranging from 25 years’ imprisonment to life and capital punishment for grave human trafficking offenses. According to Belayihun, the ruling reflects the government’s growing concern over the rise of organized transnational crimes, including human trafficking, which continues to claim the lives of many Ethiopians attempting to migrate through irregular means. He said efforts are underway to raise public awareness, strengthen inter-regional coordination, and develop legal frameworks to curb illegal migration. Belayihun noted the importance of addressing underlying drivers of irregular migration, particularly youth unemployment, stating that the government is prioritizing domestic job creation to protect vulnerable youth from trafficking networks. Belayihun further noted that Ethiopia is enhancing cooperation with neighboring countries, including Djibouti, Kenya, and Malawi, to dismantle transnational trafficking networks. The ministry described the court ruling as a sign of the government’s renewed commitment to combating human trafficking and strengthening accountability. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), many Ethiopian migrants continue to use irregular routes facilitated by smugglers, facing severe risks along the way. The most common is the Eastern Route to Gulf countries via Djibouti or Somaliland, involving dangerous sea crossings and harsh conditions in Yemen. Others take the Northern Route through Sudan and Libya to Europe, where detention and abuse are widespread. A smaller number use the Southern Route through Kenya to South Africa, also marked by exploitation. Picture:AP

Mother blames gov’t forces for toddler’s killing in #Oromia; local official cites crossfire amid clashes with #OLA The mother of a 1-year-8-month-old toddler in the Ilu Aba Bor zone of Oromia has accused government security forces of killing her child during a raid in Nopha district. Local authorities confirmed the child’s death but said it occurred amid crossfire between government forces and militants from the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Zara Hassan, the mother of Zakir Tolasa, told Addis Standard that government soldiers fatally shot her child on 16 July 2025 in Cage locality, where the family had lived for over five years as farmers. “Around 5 p.m., government soldiers arrived and began shooting indiscriminately,” she said. “My child was in his father’s arms when he was struck by a bullet. After he died, his father had to leave his body behind and flee for his life.” The Cage locality, where the incident took place, had previously remained largely unaffected by the militarized confrontations between OLA and government forces that have gripped other parts of western and southern Oromia for years. Dejene Kebede, Nopha district administrator, acknowledged that members of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) were also killed during the clashes. He said the family’s home was caught in the exchange, but claimed that OLA militants had been using the house as a hideout for several days prior. addisstandard.com/?p=51626
