A FINAL-YEAR undergraduate student is pushing his physical and mental limits this summer in an inspiring fundraising challenge for Willow Wood Hospice. Travis Taylor, 21, who is studying English and Creative Writing at the University of Leeds and has ambitions to become an English Professor, is preparing to run seven marathons in seven consecutive days as part of his self-created ‘Week at the Knees’ challenge. Starting on July 1, Travis will take on the remarkable feat of running a total of 295 kilometres across the week, all in aid of the hospice based in Ashton-under-Lyne. WITH just weeks to go until Stalybridge Carnival returns, this year’s milestone celebration is shaping up to be one of the biggest in the event’s history. It rolls back into town on Sunday, June 28, marking the 50th occasion of the much-loved tradition. Preparations are now in full swing behind the scenes to make sure the golden anniversary is one to remember. Residents can expect a packed day of entertainment across the town, with the famous parade once again taking centre stage as it winds through Stalybridge from 1pm after setting off from Bayley Street. A COMMUNITY centre in Tameside is about to become the setting for a terrifying new British horror comedy. Filming began at weekend in Mottram on an ambitious independent feature, shot almost entirely in the village. From Saturday, May 23, Mottram Community Centre will swap toddler groups and coffee mornings for cameras, lighting rigs and a cast of familiar television faces as production starts on Highly Recommended. STALYBRIDGE is preparing to get the last laugh this summer as the Comedy Weekender returns with a bill packed full of TV stars, award winners and stand-up heavyweights. After selling out audiences in its debut year, the two-night comedy event is making a comeback at Victoria Market Hall in the town centre on July 17 and 18. NEWLY elected Denton MP Hannah Spencer called for alcohol to be banned for MPs in Westminster during her first exchange at Prime Minister’s Questions. The Green Party MP, who won February’s Denton and Gorton by-election, challenged Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer over MPs drinking cheaper alcohol before votes in Parliament. Parents looking ahead to future school places are being invited to visit St Raphael’s Catholic Primary School in Stalybridge as admissions open for Nursery and Reception pupils. The school has confirmed that places are available for children starting in Nursery in 2026 and Reception in 2027, with families encouraged to arrange a visit to see the school and meet staff. Final preparations are underway for this weekend’s Party in the Park at Victoria Park, Denton, with organisers promising a packed programme of family entertainment. 🎉 The event runs on May 23, 24 and 25 from 12 noon, featuring the Kids Adventure Kingdom inflatable world, live entertainment and “Dentons Got Talent” on Monday. Entertainer Vince Hughes will also appear on Monday between 2pm and 4pm. The family fun weekend is being held in association with Denton Community Hub, Denise Ward and Kids Adventure Kingdom.

A MAN has been arrested after police uncovered a large cannabis farm hidden inside a house in Ashton-under-Lyne. Officers carried out a warrant at a property on Broadoak Road in the Ashton Hurst area on Thursday morning (May 21), where they discovered what was described as a “fully operational” grow.
