Yeah, it's kind of ironic… 😅 Japan promotes “Cool Japan” and cute culture overseas, but inside the country, a lot of people still look down on otaku and Lolita stuff, thinking it’s embarrassing or cringy. Even Lolita girls wear super flashy frilly clothes but often say “please don’t stare at me” lol. Otaku girls call their own style “imo” (plain/embarrassing potato girl) as self-deprecation, and decorate bags with tons of badges then call them “itabag” (painful bag). Guys do the same — they cover their cars with huge anime prints and call them “itasha” (painful car), or joke “itai itai~ www” while doing it. We love these things but still roast ourselves a lot. In Japan, even people who aren’t really otaku tend to be pretty quiet and don’t like standing out much. So even girls who like cute and unique fashion that naturally draws attention end up doing this kind of self-mocking humor. It’s become really common here, but I think this kind of mindset doesn’t translate well overseas 😂

This cute girl posted happy mirror selfies in her favorite frilly AXES clothes. Her friends encouraged her to finally wear the stuff she loves, and the post is super wholesome and positive 💕 But the quote tweets? Brutal, no mercy. Like: - “Why do AXES otaku girls always have no bangs tho?” - “You can’t hide that imo (plain otaku) vibe when you have bangs” - “If a friend told me I look like an AXES type I’d literally die of embarrassment” - “Looks better without bangs / on a prettier girl” One Japanese girl summed it up perfectly: “The quotes are straight up hell… The random rule that ‘you need no bangs to wear AXES’ is insane. This is scary 😱” Just having or not having bangs turns into this huge drama. Everyone acts like there’s some official rule about it. Crazy, right? And honestly, in Japan, just wearing this kind of frilly style often gets called “not stylish” or “imo girl” (plain/otaku-looking). But I don’t mind at all ✨ I choose these clothes because I actually like that cute imo vibe. I’d rather wear something that makes me happy every day than worry about looking “polished.” Being a happy potato in cute clothes is not a bad thing at all 🍠☺️ What do you think? Is it this harsh in your country’s fashion scene?
