It was because religion united the Kabyles that they could indulge their disagreements over other matters without this threatening to disrupt the political order.

The fact that the Kabyles were all Sunni Muslims of the Maliki rite meant that there was no basis for political conflict in formal religious difference. Religion was a fundamental part of the common ground on which political conflict about other matters could be conducted.
