🇾🇪 A Tribute to Andrei Kanchelskis When Andrei Kanchelskis boarded a flight to England in March 1991, he didn't know which club he was signing for. He asked his agent and was told simply, "To Manchester." When he asked “which club?” the reply came: "I don't know." It was only when the car pulled up at Old Trafford that he realised. That might sound like a chaotic start. But there was something fitting about it. Kanchelskis had spent his whole life moving into the unknown. Born in Kirovohrad, Ukraine, he left home at 14 to join a sports boarding school more than 200 kilometres from his family. He played for Dynamo Kyiv, then moved to Shakhtar Donetsk, and then as the Soviet Union was literally disintegrating around him he crossed into a world where almost nobody knew his name. 🔴 Ferguson's Gamble Ferguson had personally scouted him during an international between Scotland and the Soviet Union and was convinced it was worth taking the gamble. He had first come across him through a VHS tape sent by Norwegian agent Rune Hauge. On the strength of that tape and one live viewing, Ferguson signed him for £650,000, describing it as a "justifiable risk." He was, in fact, Ferguson's first successful non-British or Irish signing.
