🇨🇵 #HistoireDeFrance

@mattyglesias Hey Mattey, why don't you learn some phil lang, learn some intellectual integrity, and stop deleting your posts that expose your ignorance.

@mattyglesias Your argument here is invariably the first reply of an undergrad upon first hearing Putnam's argument via the Twin Earth Thought Experiment. Obviously, you haven't read Kripke either! @mattyglesias let's do the basic phil lang research before presuming to lecture on phil lang!

@Rainmaker1973 If you know about chess, you know that most grandmasters would score 10-0 here.

Fun fact. Magnus Carlsen played a blindfold chess game simultaneously against ten lawyers at Harvard University. The score: 10-0 for Magnus. x.com/i/status/18859…

@aufgehenderRest This list is pretty bad. You have Beauvoir and Stein but not Hume or Locke?? Not to mention you left off Kripke, Russell, Frege, Berkeley, and many other philosophers more important than a bunch of those you included. At least you include a fair number of important philosophers.

@mattyglesias Please do more careful research in the future. This podcast got so many things wrong, e.g. saying that Jennifer Shahade is a 2x chess champion in the open division. That is just false. Another example: saying that gender-based harassment is a serious problem in online chess.

What are examples of sayings that are on one level trite, in that anyone can recite them in order to sound smart, but also deeply true and vitally important in certain contexts? "Correlation isn't causation" is what comes to mind for me but I'm searching for other examples.

@RogueWPA @jessesingal That is not implication. Implication is a necessary relation, i.e. X implies Y = If X is true, then, necessarily, Y is true.

@jessesingal the usual version is "correlation does not imply causation" which is ridiculous as of course it implies causation, that's why we care about correlation, what it doesn't do is demonstrate or prove causation

@n_g_laskowski Divine Command Theory: -An action is obligatory if and only if God commands it. -An action is impermissible if and only if God proscribes it. -An action is permissible if and only if God neither commands it, nor proscribes it.

@RealDJCthulhu I'm in philosophy and even though there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of philosophy terms that get misused, the most common, persistent, and annoying misuse is of "metaphysics."

@Bain8renn @RightWingCope What's even funnier is a lot of people in the comments aren't getting why this is so bad, that this person is in the bottom 12 percent, not the top 12.

What is the name for claiming some group wants to do X, when basically *everyone* wants to do X? "Libs want to indoctrinate kids" (so do cons) "White men protect other white men" (people protect ingroup members) Not looking to litigate these examples but is there a name?

@mattyglesias I guess water = H20 is also ahistorical and couldn't possible be accurate since the term "water" clearly predates the science of H20. Get a grip on the basic concepts and arguments in Phil Lang @mattyglesias You sound like an ignorant undergrad! @kausmickey @robertwrighter
