In response to the growing opioid epidemic, Sheriff Hardwick and SJSO personnel are highlighting how re-entry services provided within the St. Johns County jail are helping save lives and reduce crime. The SJSO Re-entry Center offers overdose prevention, narcotics education, and other support programs and resources to equip individuals with tools that positively influence their transition back into the community. These initiatives reflect a vision Sheriff Hardwick has worked towards implementing. Since the introduction of re-entry programs in St. Johns County, recidivism has reduced by 10%, creating a positive impact across our agency and community. 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐃𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 Homicide suspect, Christian Barrios (32), has been captured following a coordinated effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Around 10:30 p.m. last night, SJSO deputies responded to a shooting in the parking lot of Walgreens in Ponte Vedra Beach (860 A1A N). Upon arrival of deputies, two victims were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and transported to local hospitals where they succumbed to thier injuries. The suspect, Christian Barrios, fled from the shooting scene. Through investigative efforts, detectives learned Barrios traveled to the shooting location to confront the victims. SJSO deputies and K9 teams engaged in an intensive search of the nearby area, including the PGA Tour grounds, in an attempt to locate Barrios. Early this morning during the manhunt, just after 4 a.m., SJSO responded to a burglary of a residence. During this part of the investigation, it was learned a dark colored BMW was stolen from the residence in Ponte Vedra Beach. Barrios was located driving the suspected stolen vehicle in Nassau County. After a pursuit, NCSO deputies stopped the vehicle and Barrios fled on foot. In joint efforts, NCSO and SJSO K9 units tracked Barrios into the woods and quickly located him hiding just before 8 a.m at CR 108, just south of Middle Road near Callahan. Barrios was apprehended and taken into custody without incident. Barrios is charged with two counts of first degree murder (no bond), Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling ($200k bond), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon ($100k bond), Shooting into a conveyance ($100k bond), and Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle ($100k bond). Thank you to our law enforcement partners: Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville Beach Police Department, St. Augustine Police Department, FBI, and Florida Highway Patrol for their assistance during the investigation.

The suspect, Raymond Gray (40), struck the victim with a hatchet, before stealing the victim's car keys and vehicle. Deputies later located the stolen vehicle in the area of US-1 and Wildwood Drive and attempted a traffic stop. Gray refused to stop and led deputies on a brief pursuit. The SJSO Air Unit tracked from above, witnessing the vehicle crash in a wooded area, and Gray flee on foot. Through clear communication, the Air Unit led responding deputies to Gray's hiding spot in the woods. The hatchet used to strike the victim was recovered from the vehicle. Gray was arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement, and Criminal Mischief.
