Kenya’s Gig Economy is Now a Billion-Dollar Market
This morning, at a media briefing hosted by Bolt Kenya, Soyinka Witness from Ipsos Strategy3 shared fresh insights from their Gig Economy Report — and the numbers are staggering.
1/ The gig economy in Kenya is valued at over $1 billion (USD 1,029,133,379.20)
2/ 30–40% smartphone penetration, meaning mobile-led work is now mainstream
3/ Over 1.5 million gig workers power this ecosystem
4/ Ride-hailing alone accounts for 20% of gig-based activity — second only to e-commerce
But beyond the numbers, the report reminds us why this matters:
✅ Provides income for youth and underemployed populations
✅ Supports household cash flow — school fees, rent, and daily essentials
✅ Offers flexible access to opportunity without bureaucracy
✅ Acts as a shock absorber during economic volatility
This is a powerful reflection of Kenya’s digital economy maturity — and of platforms like Bolt that continue to lead in mobility innovation and empowerment.
I’d love to hear your thoughts:
1/ Are we doing enough to support gig workers beyond access to income?
2/ What policies or innovations could further accelerate value creation in this space?
