I stopped engaging with Nollywood 'way-forward' conversations on Twitter and this in a nutshell, is why.
Every time practitioners speak, non-practioners tell us we are talking rubbish.
The Nollywood discourse on here is so devoid of good faith.

This the problem with not understanding a topic but trying to speak authoritatively on it. To the point of insulting the people who are actually in the industry. Instead of just engaging in an actual conversation. Are film and music production investment and distribution the same? Do music and film subscription streaming platforms operate the same models? Or are you comparing Hollywood that’s over 100 years old, where actors, for decades, have even complained about their royalties being worth nothing by the time studios and distributors back out cost so they only receive cheques that they cant do nothing with. Is that the industry you’re comparing with Nollywood that’s still trying to figure out its financing and distribution?

I agree to this. I know people will argue that it’s not so In Hollywood but that’s Hollywood. THIS IS NOLLYWOOD. Producers go through a lot to get financing and all to make a successful movie so let’s tailor ROYALTIES IN A WAY IT CAN BENEFIT BOTH PARTIES.

If you want royalties, back end. Put your money in the film. Negotiate a slashed fee or nothing at all for a percentage. Put body joor. Let’s all enjoy the benefit of the hard labour.

And these actors don’t even ask for small money. They don’t care where the film is going or how you’ll make your money back, they’ll take 100% of their fee and sometimes won’t even post it on social media, even when it’s in the contract.

You people shouting “royalties” have you asked the real question. How are producers even distributing their films?
It sounds good in theory, but a lot of producers are still struggling to recover their budgets. Many films don’t even break even.
Before royalties, we should be talking about:
Structured and trackable distribution channels
Transparent reporting from streaming platforms
Stronger legal frameworks that actually protect revenue.
Because right now, most Nollywood filmmakers are running on passion, not profit.
Also, let’s be honest, actors can’t collect full upfront fees (sometimes very high ones) and still expect lifetime royalties on the same project. That model only works in industries where consistent profit
Revenue tracking is airtight, and contracts are structured differently from the start.
Until we fix the foundation, royalties will just be another idea that sounds good but collapses in practice.
I respect what Kanayo O Kanayo is saying, but the conversation should start with fixing the business of Nollywood, not just adding new financial expectations on producers who are already carrying the risk.

Lols. What type of income model is this?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Dear @KanayoOKanayo There is something called RISK in investment. IF YOU DO NOT SHARE IN RISK OF INVESTING IN MOVIE PRPDUCTION...YOU CANNOT EARN ROYALTIES IN PERPERUITY. So if you desire to earn royalty as an Actor/ Actress in a movie, two major clauses must exist in the revenue model. 1) Then do not ask to be paid for acting...stake 100% of it as your investment to share the risk. determine value/fees of your Acting contribution and agree on percentage worth to the total investment to produce the movie....and you become part owner of the IP ( Intelectual property) Then you share in royalties in proportion to your investment. OR 2) Determine and agree total value of your acting contribution/ fees...ask to be paid a a percentage and the rest is your investment portion in the movie IP. ( Intellectual Property) Then earn royalties in prportion to your investment . That is the PRINCIPLE IN ROYALTY EARNINGS. You cant earn royalties without investment.
