. What can a person do to get closer to God? Nothing. In Christ Jesus God has come close to us. He gives us His very Spirit in Baptism. He is in our heart and on our lips. As a mother expresses her milk to her baby God expresses Himself to us in the hearing of His gospel promises and in the receiving of His body & bloody in His Supper. One cannot get any closer to God than that. And it is all God's work. We passively receive God in Word & sacrament as we passively received life from Him when we came out of our mother's womb. Our faith touches down, comes to us tangibly, in the real stuff of God's creation so that there's no need to try to spiritualize God or to look to ourselves for evidence. We don't have to prove it, or rationalize it... we just take Him at His Word.

God's grace is sufficient. Hebrews 13:9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so.
