Yesterday evening, 200 people met in Station Hall, Herne Hill to discuss the future of the Brockwell Lido. We discussed Lambeth Council's plans to take over the running of lido from Fusion Lifestyle, and our aspirations for real community involvement, governance and investment..

@j_amesmarriott Yeah older people read. But then why is booktok or whatever it is called such a thing? It always annoyed me at radio 4 how they would fret about ‘replenishment’ - we all age, as long as you don’t alienate your audience, they will eventually tune in.

@Tempocraig 😂 And yes I've seen some stuff along those lines. I'm wary but perhaps its true. A lot of people I know in publishing seem quite worried. But if there are people reading more I'd be curious to know how old they are...

One problem with tackling this is that our culture is allergic to perceived elitism and snobbishness. But we urgently need to bring back social disapproval for inane short form video content and phone addiction.
James Marriott@j_amesmarriott

Purely anecdotal but ambient phone addiction seems way more severe than even five years ago. Everyone on public transport hypnotised by TikTok or Instagram Reels. The rise of short form video - the crack cocaine of smartphones.

@j_amesmarriott Well i would shoot myxomatosis rabbits as a kid on my mate’s farm so i am one of the awful human beings. There was something about reading in the ft weekend that said publishing industry is ok cos although fewer people read, those that do are reading more, hope?

@j_amesmarriott I read your Cat Massacre book on holiday. That to some degree shines a light on why we are like this with our phones.

@DrMatthewSweet S says the book is still in the house somewhere. My only other memory: him regretting not buying the Chelsea mews houses he’d lived in during the 60s. In a way, nice to know even the Terences of this world have those London regrets

Terence Stamp was Angel and Devil on screen. Interviewing him was a wicked pleasure. But seeing him around town, on the bus with his Eric Morecambe flat cap, sitting at the old heel bar at Piccadilly, was best of all. bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01…

And here is @DanNeidle, with the anecdote referenced on the #BBCSundayShow this morning. The Scottish Government did not consult its Tax Advisory Group on its income tax policy. Remarkable.
Sam Taylor@staylorish

The Scottish Government didn’t bother to consult its Tax Advisory Group on its income tax policy. Astonishing, if true. And Shirley-Anne Somerville does not deny it. @mmgeissler asking the questions on #BBCSundayShow

Paul Baxendale-Walker is a struck-off solicitor and occasional porn star whose tax scheme bankrupted Rangers, was convicted of forgery, sued by a client for negligence and then went bankrupt. HMRC have just criminalised his offshore trust schemes.

How did a fridge cost the UK £10bn? All is revealed in the last episode of this season of Untaxing, 1.45pm today on Radio 4, and then on BBC Sounds.

Today might be the day Donald Trump slaps tariffs on UK goods — because he thinks VAT is a tariff. Yes, he's wrong. But the reason *why* he's wrong is surprisingly deep. So here's a 🧵 on the nerdy detail of VAT: via beer, Jaffa Cakes and an economic theorem from 1936.

How did the Beatles respond to the 95%+ tax rates of the 1960s? By writing a song. And doing something else, that saved them £m of tax, but which they later discovered was a huge mistake. More on Untaxing - BBC Radio 4 at 1.45pm today, and on BBC Sounds once it's aired.

By coincidence, the next episode of Untaxing delves into how four people responded to the high tax rates of the 60s. Spoiler: not by paying tax. Bigger spoiler: their names were John, Paul, George and Ringo. BBC Radio 4 at 1.45pm tomorrow.

We’ve had a blast working with Dan - the perfect presenter. ‘Knows his stuff’ doesn’t even come close. A natural behind the mic and if any angry lawyers’ letters land after the broadcast, well, we know exactly who to call …
Dan Neidle@DanNeidle

Some news: I'm presenting and co-writing a new short Radio 4 series, Untaxing. It's about how tax affects our lives: from the Laffer Curve, to the Beatles, to Jaffa Cakes, and modern day avoidance. 1.45pm on Radio 4, every day next week, and on BBC Sounds as each episode airs.

@DrMatthewSweet @j_amesmarriott Oh yeah that’s right, he was a trailblazer with home studios and videocasting as he has that fancy set up in his pad in Wapping. Clive James on Fame in the 21st Century - I’d read that!

@Tempocraig @j_amesmarriott Well Clive was very smart with the new media of his moment, wasn't he? Community TV, "the information super-highwaaay!" and his website. I think he dreamed of some alternative world in which he was regarded as a great poet. But I think the poetry is the slightest part of his work

@j_amesmarriott @Tempocraig The prospect of death made him nicer. He said it himself, and having interviewed him in health and sickness, I'd say he was right. Like several of his contemporaries - Jonathan Miller, for instance - he came to believe (wrongly I think) that he had wasted himself in television.
