And you saw that lack of power, both on serve and from the baseline, in that second set. Forti tightened up his baseline game and extended rallies with Carboni. However, Forti did a better job than Carboni of finishing off the points when he finally saw openings to exploit.

I love watching Carboni play. Great movement, heavy forehand, + he spreads the court well. My worry, long-term, is that he's a bit underpowered, but he's only 20 years old, so he has some time. Takes the first set 6-4 over Forti in Naples, with Francesco missing WAY too many BHs.

@mxihy1 Backhand holding up well and he's ALL over the court, making Forti hit extra shot after extra shot.

Three players that I have been really impressed with watching over the past couple of days: 1. Sebastian Korda: I have been a huge Korda critic over the years, but his performance against Ugo Carabelli last night was sensational. So solid from the baseline, great depth, and he

When I watch a match like Ostapenko-Paolini, I don't really see Paolini's game "declining" this season. More so, it's just regressing to the mean. Last year, this year, any year, if Ostapenko hits her shots like she did for stretches today, nothing Jasmine could do about it.

Not the best showing for Tien so far, as he's quickly down 2-6 to Majchrzak. The Pole is playing pretty well from the baseline, but you can't be putting in 48% of your first serves, winning just 31% of your second serves, and making 11 FH UE if you're Tien.

@TennisBlogger1 Any idea if he’s hurt? There were rumblings he might’ve been injured against Sinner, wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but definitely a slow start today.

Body language from Tien is just weird today. You keep expecting him to make the push to gain back control of this match, but he's just slappy the ball and doesn't seem willing to grind these rallies out like he typically does.

And that's why I'm always hesitant when people are hyping up Tien. He has to consistently be locked in and playing at a really high baseline level to be competitive at the top of the ATP Tour given his weaker serve and lack of firepower. And Im not sure it's sustainable long-term

@icefrostyman Speaking of...horrendous forehand unforced error on a meatball second serve for Tien there.

@icefrostyman Agreed to an extent, but man, Tien has just not looked good from the baseline from what I've seen. The forehand is way more erratic than it typically is, reminds me of how Learner played against Michelsen in Canada last year in terms of the game not clicking whatsoever (for now).

when given the opportunity and has been INCREDIBLY consistent from the ground, getting great depth, as well. His movement has been excellent and his backhand is also holding up very well. He’s been a nightmare to play from the ground, hitting that CC FH very effectively.

3. Franco Roncadelli: He’s done it two nights in a row, beating Vallejo and Reid Da Silva in Asunción. He’s been incredible (for his normal level) over the past couple of matches. He’s normally underpowered and still is on serve, but he’s cracking that forehand from the baseline

@mattracquet @Gill_Gross It could very-well just be that since a lot of the other events are quicker, and more recent, it’s easier to just compare to Dubai, for instance, as opposed to try to remember what rallies were like in Indian Wells a year ago, you know?

@TennisBlogger1 @Gill_Gross Highest Indian Wells CPI (39), highest ace rate (11% up from 7-8% range in prev years), lowest avg rally length (4.1 down from 4.5 avg in previous years), 82% hold rate etc. Points also looked meaningfully quicker to me and I’m surprised this isn’t a near universal experience

@tiagormaia @Gill_Gross Yeah...definitely faster than before but not fast by any means, in my opinion. I always prefer slower surfaces so I would like it to go back to the way it was before, even though I dont' think it was thatttt big of a difference.
