@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb Chattel slavery was not long ago. There are ppl still alive whose parents were sharecroppers; one step removed from slavery. These institutions are so built in and dismantling them will take time. Progress is progress even if it benefits some but not all who need it the most.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb Considering how old the world is and how young the US is, I think a lot of progress has been made. There will always be a whitelash to progress for marginalized groups and so this idea that really good things haven't been done is a bit entitled and self centered, imo

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb So I feel a sense of entitlement. Civil Rights ppl didn't like a lot of the people they had to work with but kept the larger goal as the prize, and also had to deal with those who felt they didn't go far enough. I just can't get on board with accelerationists.

@TerpGrad01 @BunchOfNumb If all they gotta do, literally is be slightly less bad than the opposition, it very quickly becomes not much of a real choice. There needs to be some tail end of how shitty a party can be before they start losing votes.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb So yes there would need to be major overhaul to make it easier to vote. I'd much rather do that then a penalty. Make voting a federal holiday and expand early voting and methods to make it easier.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb Yes I know. There would need to be other things in place because their election day is on a Saturday, but it would still impact groups who don't get weekends off which tend to be more poor and Black; hourly and gig workers.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb That is spoon feeding behavior to me because again, politics is going to happen regardless. Someone is going to win. Being a citizen encompasses civic responsibility. In Australia you get fined for not voting. I like that.

@TerpGrad01 @BunchOfNumb If they were sympathetic to that line of reasoning, they wouldn't be non-voters or third party voters in the first place. You can be mad at them but if you want their votes you're gonna have to be more persuasive than that.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb Then what is the difference between shaming me for being a "genocide supporter" because I voted for Harris? Shame happens on both sides. I don't like what Netanyahu is doing but I'm not a single issue voter either. That's not how global politics work.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb Now that is where we will just have to agree to disagree, and I specifically mean Black ppl. After all that was sacrificed so Black ppl could vote, to not vote is a slap in the face to them. I have more respect for Black MAGA voters than ones who didn't vote at all.

@TerpGrad01 @BunchOfNumb I agree but I don't think you get people to vote by shaming them about not voting. It's all distraction, imo. Look at someone like Hasan Piker who in all likelihood voted Dem but never pressured his audience to do the same. I promise you he was effective in getting some to vote.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb I've never voted for anyone I was in complete alignment with. I also hate phrasing of "perfect" candidate. Doesn't exist and when you use that language you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

@TerpGrad01 @BunchOfNumb I've ran a (losing) campaign for a state house candidate, helped architect the recall of a lobbyist from our city council and more than once thrown together winning coalitions for progressive causes on city issues. Truly wish more people were tapped into it.

@AWillroth @BunchOfNumb I'd still say I'm a pragmatic voter. I do vote against Republicans. Being anti-Trump was good enough for me cuz at the end of the day I'm going to look at the platforms and make a decision and I do have things to vote FOR with every Dem I've voted for.
