In 2011, archaeologists from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) made a remarkable discovery at the base of the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacán: a 2,000-year-old green serpentine stone mask. This exquisite artifact was part of a rich offering found at the very foundational level of the massive structure, suggesting it was placed there as part of a dedication ceremony to inaugurate the pyramid's construction, which began around 100 CE.
The mask, carved from a single piece of serpentine, stands out due to its lifelike and highly detailed features, a rarity among Teotihuacán masks, which are often more stylized and less voluminous. Its exceptional artistry has led some researchers to theorize that it might be a portrait of a specific individual, possibly even a ruler who oversaw the early phases of the pyramid's construction. This would be an incredible insight, given that the identities of Teotihuacán's rulers and builders remain largely unknown.
Along with the mask, the offering cache included other significant items such as fragments of clay pottery, obsidian blades and projectile points, animal bones (including those of an eagle that had reportedly eaten rabbits), and three other smaller serpentine human figurines. The presence of these objects within a sealed ritual context provides invaluable clues about the religious practices, symbolism, and societal organization of the enigmatic Teotihuacán civilization, a powerful and influential metropolis whose true name and the reasons for its eventual abandonment are still subjects of intense archaeological investigation.

This guy was knocking down a wall in his basement, and uncovered an entire hidden city.
In 1963, a homeowner in central Turkey was renovating his house, he noticed a small opening behind a wall. Curious, he broke through, and found a narrow passage leading deep underground.
What he had stumbled upon was Derinkuyu Underground City, a vast subterranean city hidden beneath the region of Cappadocia.
It was an entire underground world.

I still can’t get over the The Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Museum of Anthropology) in Mexico City -
I went to this Museum last week…..as an architect, as a visitor to this great Country, and as a pupil of Life. This museum (even without any of the artifacts inside) is a History lesson of Mexico in “Pure Form”, and inspired me to no end. I made this video of the “Feeling” it bestowed upon me, and I played some music to it………that’s enough for now…..”The Feeling”.
I am still wandering my way through my pictures and memories, and I intend to make a detailed post of this amazing piece of architecture. It deserves it. Mexico should be proud to have such a wondrous history, and the architects and architecture to hold that history in place.
