Takeshi Murakami built a backyard koi pond in Cedar Rapids and stocked it with fourteen fish worth a combined six thousand dollars. Within a week, a great blue heron ate three of them. He tried netting. The heron pushed through. He tried a plastic owl decoy. The heron knocked it over. Then something strange happened. A second heron showed up. Then a third. By October, eleven great blue herons stood motionless around his pond in a perfect ring, all day, every day - not eating the fish. Just standing there. A wildlife biologist from Kirkwood College came out and started laughing. "They're guarding the territory from each other. None of them can eat because none of them will leave." Takeshi hasn't lost a fish since September.
