Happy to have attended the Mayor‘s Reception in honour of Black History Month. It was a pleasure to meet and chat with the Black History Manitoba Celebration Committee and other community leaders who contribute so much to the well-being of community members across Winnipeg and Manitoba. I look forward to continuing to work with community members to empower Black Canadians, not only in February, but year-round.

Today, on the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia, we honour the memory of the six Muslim Canadians who were killed and the 19 others who were injured in the 2017 terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy. Islamophobia is a persistent and dangerous reality many Canadians face across Manitoba and Canada. Hate targeting Muslim Canadians has continued to rise at an alarming rate, harming individuals, dividing communities, and threatening their safety, dignity, and well-being. This must stop. Hatred has no place in Winnipeg South, or anywhere in Canada. Today and everyday, I am committed to continue working alongside Muslim community leaders to prevent hate and ensure all Canadians, regardless of faith or background, can live, gather, and worship freely, safely, and in a dignified manner.

Thank you to the Winnipeg Police, the RCMP as well as the individuals and community organizations that helped look for my father Don Duguid since he went missing. He has been located safely and is on his way home. Many thanks for all of the kind messages of support.

Canada’s liberal government is introducing the new Canada Groceries and Essential Benefit – formerly the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Credit. We are increasing its amount by 25% for five years beginning in July 2026. In addition to that, we are providing a one-time payment, equivalent to a 50% increase this year. Combined, this means that a family of four will receive up to $1,890 this year, and about $1,400 a year for the next four years.

Excited to be back in Ottawa for our National Caucus Retreat after a time well-spent connecting with constituents and community leaders ! Yesterday, we got the ball rolling with a Prairies and North Caucus meeting, where we discussed regional priorities. From housing to affordability, I am committed to continue advocating and working on the issues affecting the families and community members of Winnipeg South.

This week at the Western Canada Economic Forum I pressed the case for the Prairie provinces to think and act like a region. Our future prosperity runs through the Prairies. This is where the action is on resource development, Indigenous reconciliation, critical minerals, energy and climate, and national unity. When the Prairie provinces and the federal government work together we can build an economy that delivers for our people and strengthens Canada, showing cooperative federalism works.

Honoured to attend the Groundbreaking of the Prairie Biologics Accelerator at the University of Manitoba. Covid-19 showed we needed stronger domestic capacity to manufacture vaccines. Today, we are building that resilience at home, in the prairies. Canada’s new government is investing $57 million, the largest research award in UM history, for two new research facilities and vaccine and bio-manufacturing research. What makes this special is that it is a prairie-wide partnership between the UM and Universities of Calgary, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. We are building Canada Strong by investing in research innovation.

@MarkJCarney In an era of great power rivalry, Canada is choosing to be principled and pragmatic. To name reality, to act together, and to build what we claim to believe in.

I was honoured to join community leaders at the Downtown Y for the Heart of the City Campaign Milestone Celebration! The YMCA is a champion in supporting Winnipeggers, with the Downtown Y serving our city since 1913. With the proposed expansion plan, the Downtown Y aims to enhance its support for all community members through initiatives such as the expansion of childcare, mental health support, and programming for newcomers. This vision responds directly to the needs of the downtown community and reflects who we are as a city.

Distraught to learn of the death of a Canadian citizen and many Iranians at the hands of the Iranian regime. I stand in solidarity with the people of Iran as they stand up for their dignity and their fundamental right to shape their own future. For decades, I have stood with community leaders who have fought for freedom and democracy and whose courage continues to inspire me. As the tyrannical Iranian regime continues to disregard human life and use violence, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation tactics against peaceful protesters, Canada has and will continue to implement measures to hold the regime accountable for its support for terrorism, human rights violations, and destabilizing activities. Canada condemns and calls for an immediate end to the Iranian regime’s violence.

Thank you to Asian Women of Winnipeg for hosting the annual Lohri Mela celebration this Saturday. Lohri honours newborns and newlyweds and marks the return of longer days in the Punjabi tradition. This weekend was also a wider celebration of our Asian cultures here in Manitoba. I am fortunate to represent Winnipeg South, the most diverse riding in Manitoba, and I have the privilege of celebrating with our communities all year long. It is wonderful to see our youth connected to their cultures, languages, and traditions.

Honoured to stand in solidarity with the Iranian community at the University of Manitoba, supporting the ongoing call for freedom, dignity, and human rights. Since the start of the Women, Life, Freedom movement, I’ve stood with friends and community members whose courage continues to inspire.

It was an honour to attend the Muslim Legacy Fund dinner and to bring greetings on behalf of the federal government. The Muslim Legacy Fund’s sustainable approach to community funding is making a real difference, and it was inspiring to hear how much impact it has and continues to be made. Congratulations to all six award recipients, who deserve this for their leadership and service. Thank you to everyone involved for a meaningful and uplifting evening.

Today, I was pleased to join Mayor Scott Gillingham and Deputy Mayor Markus Chambers for the unveiling of the new accessible viewing platforms at the Dakota Community Centre. This City of Winnipeg investment represents an important step toward making sport and recreation more accessible for Winnipeggers living with mobility challenges, and reflects our shared commitment, across all levels of government, to building a more inclusive and equitable city. Thank you to the Dakota Community Centre management team for their leadership in delivering this important improvement for the community.

I was honoured to attend a sobriety celebration ceremony at the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. Every time I am there, I am struck by the strength of the space, the care of the staff, and the powerful foundation that Scott Oake built through his vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to saving lives. I have visited the recovery centre many times, and each one leaves me deeply moved. Watching individuals mark milestones in their recovery and begin a new chapter with courage and hope is a powerful reminder of what compassionate, community-based care can achieve. As Scott often reminds us, there is no greater gift, especially at this time of year, than seeing loved ones return home healthy and whole. We are also working hard to bring the Anne Oake Recovery Centre to life, a dedicated space for women in recovery, and I am hopeful it will be located right here in Winnipeg South. Supporting recovery, dignity, and second chances must remain a priority for our community. Congratulations to the graduates, and my sincere thanks to Scott Oake and the entire Bruce Oake Recovery Centre team for the incredible work they do every day.

Proud to join the Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation Trust and Paragon Living for the ribbon cutting at 939 Chancellor here in Winnipeg South. This project shows what’s possible when Indigenous leadership, strong partnerships, and smart investments come together, delivering high-quality housing that is inclusive, affordable, and community-focused. Fully First Nations–owned and thoughtfully designed, 939 Chancellor is setting a new standard for housing in our city. Congratulations to everyone involved on this important milestone. This is economic reconciliation in action, and I look forward to seeing more projects like this in our community.
