The events of Saturday night were horrifying. It is difficult to believe that this is the third time President Trump has faced an assassination attempt. I am thankful for the many law enforcement officers who responded, in particular those who secured the shooter before he could harm the president or anyone else at the event. Political violence is never the answer, and it must end.

Illinois Police Officer John Bartholomew was murdered when he was shot and killed by a robbery suspect at Chicago's Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital at approximately 10:50 a.m. Around 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Officer Bartholomew and another officer transported a suspect accused of robbing a Family Dollar store to the Swedish hospital for observation. Nearly two hours later, the suspect obtained a gun and fired, striking both officers. The officers were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where Officer Bartholomew was pronounced later that afternoon; the second officer is fighting for his life in critical condition. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward and is in custody. Officer Bartholomew, 38,had served with the Chicago Police Department for 10 years, assigned to the Albany Park (17th) District and was a dedicated husband and father. 🖤🙏💙🙏🖤
