I used to think the same, but after I read about it, I found out it’s not that simple. Aircraft aren’t just “metal” you can scrap casually, they’re highly regulated machines. Even when they’re retired, parts have to be documented, certified, and removed properly. Plus: Some planes are kept for spare parts, some are in storage, not abandoned. Scrapping them requires specialized processes (not your regular yard) What looks like “waste” is often controlled retirement. Still feels strange seeing them sit there though 😅

I’ve always wondered why old planes are left to rot at airports. Why don’t let scrap metal dealers and pantakers break them up and reuse them?
