After the surrender of the Cheyenne band he led in 1877 at the Battle of Little Big Horn, Two Moons chose to enlist as an Indian Scout for the same General, Nelson A. Miles, to whom he had recently surrendered.
Due to his pleasant demeanor, friendliness towards white citizens, and ability to work well with the military, General Miles appointed Two Moons as head Chief of the Cheyenne Northern Reservation. In this role, Two Moons played a crucial part in facilitating the surrender of Chief Little Cow's Cheyenne band at Fort Keogh.
Two Moons traveled to Washington, D.C., multiple times to discuss and advocate for the future of the Northern Cheyenne people and to improve the conditions on the reservation. In 1914, he met with President Woodrow Wilson to discuss these matters.
As a testament to his influence, Two Moons was one of the models selected for James Fraser's famous Buffalo Nickel. He passed away in 1917 at his home in Montana at the age of 70. His grave remains along U.S. Route 212, west of Busby, Montana.
@alyssa_danccruz Here are some of my Texas books! Read Lone Star Nation by HW Brands. The history is complex. Read of the Battle of Medina when Santa Anna was part of the Spanish Army which massacred the Tejanos, not many Anglos at that time. He was an opportunist, he didn’t care about slavery.
@TexasHistoryNut Hello! Thank you so much for reading my article. I completely understand your point, and I should have added more depth about the motivations of the Texas Revolution. Do you happen to have any book recommendations to further grow my knowledge?
@alyssa_danccruz Your article on the Texas Rev. & the Alamo is good but as is the case with history, it isn’t that simple & the Texas Rev. wasn’t simply about slavery. Five other Mexican non-slave holding states were in rebellion at some time during the same period (1835 – 1846).
Sunday Binge - Started @TheHistoryOfTh2 with (slightly tweaked) Episode One this morning during our North Padre power outage. The skies have cleared and Columbus is headed home. Good stuff, Jack!
“Where, in God’s name, do citizens of this country, many of whom claim Christianity as their foundation, get the idea that threatening people’s safety and security has any conscionable justification?”
