*Traces of Texas Tech* A colorized photo showing damage to following the devastating May 11, 1970 tornado that tore through downtown Lubbock. The 1970 Lubbock tornado remains one of the deadliest and most destructive tornadoes in Texas history. Rated an F5 on the Fujita scale, the tornado ripped through northern and downtown Lubbock after dark with catastrophic force, destroying homes, businesses, and entire sections of the city with little warning. The storm killed 26 people, injured more than 500 others, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. The disaster became a turning point for severe weather preparedness and urban tornado research in the United States. Images of destroyed neighborhoods and a devastated downtown drew national attention and helped drive improvements in tornado warning systems, emergency response planning, and building standards. More than fifty years later, the tornado remains one of the defining events in Lubbock’s history and a major case study in meteorology. Jones Stadium itself survived relatively intact, but the damage was still visible. The original light poles on the east side were bent and folded over by the storm and later repaired. Before the east side expansion and installation of the modern light towers, longtime fans could spot a reminder of the tornado by looking closely at the northernmost pole, which stood slightly shorter than the others because of the repairs made after the storm.
