Dans un esprit de responsabilité et de mesure, le Racing Club de Lens a, dès les premières sollicitations, fait connaître au Paris Saint-Germain son intention de ne pas voir cette date modifiée. Fidèle à une certaine idée de la stabilité sportive, le club avait également choisi de s’astreindre à toute communication publique sur ce sujet. Cependant, la multiplication récente de prises de parole, d’interventions et de suggestions diverses nous conduit aujourd’hui à sortir de cette réserve. Il nous apparaît en effet qu’un sentiment préoccupant tend à s’installer : celui d’un championnat de France progressivement relégué au rang de variable d’ajustement au gré des impératifs européens de certains. Une conception singulière de l’équité sportive, dont on peine à trouver l’équivalent dans les autres grandes compétitions continentales. Modifier aujourd’hui la date de cette rencontre reviendrait, pour le Racing Club de Lens, à être privé de compétition pendant 15 jours puis enchainer des matchs tous les trois jours — un rythme qui ne correspond ni à celui défini en début de championnat, ni aux moyens d’un club qui pourrait absorber sans conséquence ce type de contraintes nouvelles. Il serait donc entendu que le dixième budget du championnat devrait s’adapter aux exigences des plus puissants, au nom d’intérêts qui, manifestement, dépasseraient désormais le cadre domestique, lequel a déjà été allégé ces dernières saisons (L1 à 18 clubs, arrêt de la Coupe de la Ligue). Au-delà de ce cas particulier, la question posée est plus essentielle : celle du respect dû à la compétition elle-même. Car il est permis de s’interroger lorsque, sur son propre sol, le championnat semble parfois relégué derrière d’autres ambitions, aussi légitimes soient-elles. Le Racing Club de Lens demeure attaché à l’équité, à la clarté des règles et au respect de tous les acteurs. Des principes simples, pour un football français loyal et respecté.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel has said they have received a request from Paris Saint-Germain to postpone their top-of-the-table clash against RC Lens. The reigning European champions have been drawn against Premier League holders Liverpool in the quarter-final of the Champions League. PSG’s home fixture, at the Parc des Princes, is on Wednesday, April 8, while the return leg at Anfield is on Tuesday, April 14. In between the ties, PSG are also scheduled to face Lens on Saturday April 11 — but the governing organisation of France’s top leagues confirmed to The Athletic that they have asked for it to be rearranged. Lens, who are chasing a first league title since 1998, are strongly against the “worrying sentiment” of having the fixture moved to a later date. The side responded to PSG’s request on Tuesday, calling the “French league gradually being relegated to the status of an adjustment variable” a “peculiar concept of sporting fairness”. Some people are calling the PSG and Strasbourg fixture postponement requests favoritism. Others are calling it smart football governance. Let me show you the actual rule, the actual law, and let you decide for yourself. Article 22 of the LFP Statuts, which is the main governing document of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the body that runs Ligue 1 day to day, gives their Board the explicit power to set the match calendar at the start of every season, modify any fixture during the season whenever they choose, and do so for whatever reason they see fit, including helping French clubs go further in European competition, with no right of appeal from any club affected by that decision. Don't be confused. That is not an interpretation of the rule. That is literally what the rule says. PSG have already benefited twice this season, with their Nantes fixture moved to late April to help them recover between their Champions League round of sixteen legs against Chelsea, and there is now talk of the Lens game around April 11th being pushed back for similar reasons ahead of their quarterfinal against Liverpool, and Strasbourg are reportedly exploring a similar request if their European campaign continues deep into the knockout rounds. Now here is the part that surprises most people, which is that neither UEFA nor FIFA have any power to intervene in any of this, and ro be honest, that is not an accident, it is by design. Article 7bis(2) of the UEFA Statutes specifically states that UEFA Member Associations must manage their affairs independently and with no undue influence from third parties. UEFA only governs their own competitions and actually welcomes anything that helps clubs perform better in Europe because every time a French club goes deeper in the Champions League or Europa League it improves France's UEFA coefficient ranking, which translates directly into more automatic qualification spots and more prize money for French football as a whole, so UEFA has absolutely no motivation to object. FIFA's position is even more hands off. Article 14 of the FIFA Statutes ensures that member associations remain autonomous and free from governmental or political influence, and Article 15 further requires members to be independent. Thus, the FIFA Statutes are built on a foundational principle of domestic autonomy that gives every national association and their affiliated leagues complete sovereignty over their own competitions, their own calendars, and their own scheduling decisions. A postponed Ligue 1 fixture sits so far below the threshold of what FIFA considers worth intervening in that it would not even register as a conversation inside their offices in Zurich. So is it favoritism or smart governance? The rule is real, the principle is legally sound, and the beneficiaries so far have been the clubs with the deepest runs in European football. You decide.
