Exclusive:
Arsenal made the decision not to proceed with the Morgan Rogers deal.
Morgan Rogers and Arsenal never reached a full agreement on personal terms, with the player’s preference for a move never treated as an agreement by either party. Those within the club remained of the belief that Rogers’ preferred destination was Arsenal, and the foundations had already been laid.
Rogers maintained a respectful approach towards Aston Villa’s hierarchy throughout the process, prioritising the club’s ability to pursue the strongest possible sale should a transfer materialize.
Villa’s hierarchy, working under financial pressure, considered the current market to be inflated and sought to maximize the transfer fee by encouraging a competitive bidding process.
Arsenal were invited to formalise their interest alongside Chelsea, but Arsenal remained firm on the valuation set internally by the club’s recruitment team.
Arsenal’s hierarchy were not prepared to enter a bidding war or exceed their internal valuation, despite Arteta’s strong desire to sign Rogers, with the club remaining disciplined over the financial terms of the deal.
The club informed Villa they would not match Chelsea’s financial proposal or exceed their internal valuation of Rogers, as they won't allow themselves to be exploited because of their perceived need.
The decision was consistent with the club's wider recruitment strategy, which prioritizes internal valuations over market pressure and has previously seen the club walk away from deals they considered overvalued.
He who waits strikes true. He who hurries misses the mark. Arsenal had already begun assessing another deal before Villa were formally informed.

So one of the things, I've been asked in the last 24hrs is "How much headroom does Villa have left now?."
Villa's (#avfc) spending isn't capped by cash, it's capped by UEFA's List A settlement and squad cost rules...
After selling:
Rogers £117m
Tielemans £35m
Digne £10m
And signing:
Estupinan £12.5m
Joao Gomes £38m
Manzambi £59.5m
Villa have significantly improved their UEFA position.
The key point is that UEFA measures SCR (wages + amortisation), not just transfer fees.
Based on the current business, Villa look to have enough headroom for roughly another £15m to £25m in annual squad costs.
That translates to roughly £75-£125m in further transfer fees on typical 5 year deals before the Sept 1st deadline, assuming no unusually high wages.
If another high earner leaves i.e. (Emi Martinez, Bailey, Konsa) that figure could rise even further.
The narrative that Villa "can't spend" (which every irresponsible journo and 2-BOB cunt, clickbaiting YouTuber peddles) doesn't match how UEFA's rules actually work.
MY ASSESSMENT:
Villa's 2026 transfer window looks like exactly what UEFA wanted to see.
Significant player trading profits✅
Lower wage bill✅
Lower amortisation costs✅
Improved Squad Cost Ratio✅
Positive net transfer position✅
The transfers themselves are no longer the biggest question.
The key is Villa's next set of audited accounts. If they show the club is comfortably within UEFA's FER and SCR thresholds, there is a strong case for the CFCB (Club Financial Control Body) to lift the settlement restrictions before their scheduled end.
From where things stand today, Villa look much closer to leaving the UEFA settlement than they did 12 months ago.

Aston Villa are getting to know Andrea Berta. They have been trying to arm twist us into paying over market value for Morgan Rogers.
Unfortunately, Morgan Rogers has bought into the Arsenal project and has rejected both Tottenham and Chelsea.
It is a game of poker now. And Arsenal is winning.

@KingGary1234 @cje1874 @TheVillagraph You said he was brilliant more often than not.
There are 5 occasions where he's rated light blue or dark blue and could be classed as "brilliant"
5 from 38 isn't more often than not.

@Jamski1234 @Tyler_ Several stated it yesterday, £15m and not the £20m some have expected, which means that we may have paid more than reported for rogers at the time as the amount payable to Boro is based on profit and now reported to be £15m

It’s 15m..
Lyall Thomas@SkySportsLyall
#Middlesbrough stand to make almost £35m in profit from the sale of Morgan Rogers in Jan 24… 20% of profit for #AstonVilla’s £117m sale to #Chelseafc adds a further £20.3m to intial £15.5m sale. They paid #ManCity only £1.1m for him and he played for #Boro for six months. Unbelievable business: #liveblog-body" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">skysports.com/football/live-…

New: Hull City in talks to sign Leon Bailey from #AVFC. Villa prefer a permanent move, which is being considered. Trabzonspor & Celta Vigo have also registered interest, but staying in England thought to be preferable. @TheAthleticFC #hcafc

@FabrizioRomano @TeleFootball Even at that £85M is okay for Aston Villa.... Aston Villa are just a greëdy club!
English

🚨💸 Middlesbrough are set to receive £15m from Aston Villa as consequence of Morgan Rogers’ transfer to Chelsea.
A sell-on clause was negotiated as part of the deal, as @TeleFootball reports.

English

@avfcdiggy @marshallavfc I guess we won't move then and risk the profit cut back by uefa. As Rogers sale allows us rooma dn clears the uefa shite from my understanding
English

@james1riordan Arsenal are not going to pay £130m and you know it. Morgan Rogers will play for Arsenal next season. We will break our transfer record on him but we are certainly not paying £130m.
