I was 15 years old at a doctor's appointment by myself because my cramps were so bad I'd throw up and miss school. I thought I was finally going to get help. The doctor didn't ask how long it's been happening. Didn't ask how much blood. Didn't ask if I fainted. He looked at me and said: "Are you sexually active?" I said no. He smirked like I was lying and said: "Sure." Then he added, like it was a compliment: "You're pretty. I'm sure boys are already trying." My stomach dropped. I remember laughing a little because I didn't know what else to do. Because when you're a teenage girl alone in a room with a grown man in a white coat... you learn fast that your discomfort doesn't matter. Then he said I "needed" a pelvic exam. I said I didn't want one. He sighed like I was being annoying and said: "Don't be difficult. This is normal." No explanation. No consent. No nurse offered in the room. Just gloves. Just pressure. Just a man acting like my body belonged to him because he had a title. I froze. I stared at the ceiling. I tried to disappear. And I walked out thinking / was the problem. Years later I realized: that wasn't healthcare. That was misogyny with a stethoscope.
