A 59-page visual guide to what I'm doing with the VB language/compiler for ModVB. Hopefully this is the right height to let folks see the scale of the forest. It took a month to write. AFK for the rest of the day. anthonydgreen.net/2026/04/27/the…

Me: accidentally missed last train in Kyoto. Phone battery: 1%. hotel: on the opposite side of civilization. old taxi driver pulls over, I get in. Driver: Where to? I show address, his smile disappears immediately. Driver: ...ah. never good when elderly Japanese man says “ah” like he just saw prophecy. we drive in silence for ten minutes. then he asks: You know story of this area? Me: No. Driver: Good. refuses to elaborate, rain getting heavier, GPS suddenly loses signal. Driver taps screen aggressively. Driver: Hm. Me: What. Driver: This road appears sometimes. Me: ...sometimes? Driver: Japan has many mysteries. I start calculating if walking in thunderstorm is safer. finally we reach tiny apartment building in middle of nowhere, i pay him. before leaving he leans closer and says: If woman in white asks for directions tonight. Me: ...yes? Driver: Give wrong directions. then drives away into rain like retired anime character.

I think I managed to keep my expectations in check all the way up until this dropped. After this they went through the stratosphere. This trailer confirmed that TotK was going to do for dungeons/lore/story what BotW did for overworld exploration and be the grand unification. I still get chills watching it or listening to the music. I remember the conversation before it dropped and how everything changed after. Gotta be in the top 5 trailers of the company's history.

Eu fiquei: AH JURA SHERLOCKA

For Ocarina specifically, the sages are drawn to those places because that's where the spirits are and the source of evil radiating out from the sacred realm. So less "This is where folks regularly gather to worship" and more "This is where spirits of a particular affinity concentrate nearby". Like the spirits sanctified those places, not the Hyruleans. Then the Hyruleans later associated those sites with paying respects to those spirits. And it kinda makes more sense that way. That the living created these structures for whenever material purposes but the elements reclaimed each one over time because of where they were or what happened there. It's not the "Forest Temple" because a druidic order set up shop there but because whatever purpose that building was used for doesn't matter anymore as the forest has been aggressively reclaiming it. It's now a tribute to natural supremacy. The shadow temple attracted such spirits because of the dark deeds done there. In each case those spirits were probably naturally around anyway but the structures provided a focal point for them for whatever reason. "Temple" is just a useful though inaccurate English translation. The TotK temples were just poorly named, imo.

@cjModren I don't think most of them were for the laity. In OoT, Forest probably is/was, but the rest seem to serve some other purpose. Fire's prisons (sacrifice?), Water's by and for Hylians + the lake's unique properties, Spirit was/is moreso a palace just con-/de-secrated by Hylians

Every time I play a Zelda game I can't stop thinking about how some dungeons are "temples", imagining having to spend 45 minutes pushing blocks and raising water levels just to go to church every week.

@danielahanley Anybody who tried to b.s. an answer to a question at you so aggressively would quickly bring on violence. A.I. responses need to be presented with more humility like on the bottom right of the page. By occupying the top of the results they build so much resentment.

@justalexoki I've been protesting this since high school. I need my sentences to end in periods more than I need my quotes to end in punctuation. After decades in wondering if "quote.". Is really that bad. Thank you for making me feel less alone 😊

Without living parents, try losing your wallet and all vital docs then without a residence, mailing address, a job, money, or a bank account, and then try to get any of those things without all of the others + easy access to clean clothes and hot showers. When you fall between the cracks of society it's quite non-trivial to climb out.

still not quite over the fact that i watched 15 year olds get sued for millions of dollars for downloading twelve songs and now we all have to accept AI slop because every tech company in the known universe decided that IP laws don't exist now that they're inconvenient for them

I maintain that we should assume AI can now do most of Congress as well or better than humans, reduce Congress by 80% as a cost-saving measure, and wait for data to show us which Congress members on what committees in which regions we should consider backfilling, preferably with younger, less expensive workers who aren't so entitled. I'm always hearing my government should be run like a business yet all I'm seeing is 2-6 years job security with no performance checks or so much as quarterly OKRs. Tf.

I'm not sure I'd call it 'praise'. I'm not saying that dungeons aren't great and that I don't want dungeons back. I'm saying divine beasts aren't dungeons at all. They're like Lon Lon/Romani ranch/Jabun's cave, plot happens there. They're just a different thing that happens around the same story beats but that it's more productive to say Hyrule Castle is the only dungeon in BotW than to say that 80% of the dungeons are bad dungeons. TotK does have dungeons and they are not good at being dungeons. BotW has Zords you can go inside of. Having played what the TotK believes are dungeons coming back I can now see that the divine beasts were never even trying to compare.

Divine beasts aren't dungeons and they know it and they do a fine job at being a different kind of thing. They're short enough that I can really enjoy a replay. In TotK every "temple" other than the Lightning one wants to consume the time of a dungeon w/o the immersion. That is to say, while I was initially let down by the divine beasts I'd rather replay any of them than all but one of the TotK temples because they don't ask as much of me. I'm particularly fond of finding creative ways to cheese through Vah Medoh and I look forward to one day replaying Vah Ruta with Revali's Gale. They aren't like any previous 3D Zelda dungeons but I'm hindsight that's ok, to me. There are other worlds than these.

@Templozeldero I'll never forget running into him in the Faron province on the road past the Zonai ruins. The music was always inviting to hear. He's like a better executed Addison or Kaepora. They could sell me DLC just about finding him.

No saben cuánto extraño a Kass. Para mí, es uno de los mejores personajes musicales de la saga Zelda. En Tears of the Kingdom su ausencia se siente, porque verlo tocar sus melodías era algo hermoso y único.

@superkeara Under folklore rules, the right of invitation belongs to the inhabitant, so you have the power. However, your landlord will absolutely find a way to charge you a "blood-sucking pet fee" and keep your security deposit for any coffin scratches.

@MikeBales We should normalize elderly people doing increasingly fun yet risky activities to go out on better terms. When I get up there I want to be launched into deep space to collect data, or be part of an experimental Gundam piloting program to sweep mines or something.

My grandfather said he’d never move into a retirement home. He said, “Too expensive… and the food tastes like someone boiled sadness.” Instead, he checked into a beachfront hotel. We asked, “Grandpa, isn’t that even more expensive?” He smiled and said, “Not really. At the retirement home, I’d pay $200 a day for cold meatloaf and no visitors. But here? For $150 a day, I get ocean views, room service, fresh towels, a pool… …and suddenly all my grandkids remember I exist every weekend.” Then he leaned back in his chair and delivered the final line like a mob boss: “And if I die in the hotel lobby, the manager will actually look disappointed. But at the nursing home? They just call it Tuesday.”

@espricewright I suspect it took me so long to recognize this because language design and compiler implementation is a job role that rewards exhaustive enumeration of and preparation for bad things that could happen. I wonder how many anxious folks have been masking in QA.
