Everest and some of the other chickens on our team spent this weekend educating at the Southeast Alaska State Fair! 🐓 Besides spending time in the barn meeting people and teaching about keeping raptors and chickens safe, they also participated in our “Birds of the ABEF” show! 👏

Warrior is a pro at figuring out how to get his food out of enrichment! ❤️ Interacting with enrichment is another way the education flock gets to work their brains and bodies during the day 🧠

Bella showed off some natural behaviors by tearing apart a fish donated by these locals! 🦅 Fresh fish is an important part of an eagle’s diet, and we’re so grateful for community members that think of us when they have extra fish to share! 🎣

Guess “hoo”‘s hatch day it is! 🦉🥳🎉 Hans is 9 years old today, and we are so happy to work with him on our education team. He’ll be celebrating with some tasty rat pieces 😋

Northern Hawk owls striped and speckled feathers help them camouflage in boreal forests 🌲 Cirrus will often blend into his enclosure, then share his location with an adorable squeak 🦉

#didyouknow that it’s Bear Awareness Week? Black bears are the most widespread bear in North America, ranging from the east coast to the west, as far south as Mexico and as far north as Alaska! 🐻 Guests can learn all about the bears we see around Haines in the museum! 🐻🦅✨

It’s time for another #featherfriday challenge! 🪶 All of these feathers come from the same species of bird, but grow on different parts of the body and serve different purposes. Let us know in the comments what each feather is! Bonus points if you know what species they’re from!

This weekend the ABEF hosted a bird walk as part of the Haines Earth Day Event! 🦅 We had a great turnout and got to see and hear lots of birds. We’re looking forward to hosting more bird walks in the future! 🦉

What does your spring cleaning look like? 🧹 For us, it’s brushes, vacuums, and taxidermy! Cleaning the taxidermy is preventative conservation, which means we’re being proactive about the condition of the museum objects. We do this at least once a year! 🦊 #museummonday

We share our love for the earth with experiences like this! 🌎 You can share your love of the earth by taking action to preserve wildlife. Using live traps instead of rodenticide and copper ammunition instead of lead are great ways to protect local wildlife 🦅 #EarthDay2022

Her confidence and charisma drew drew guests to her enclosure, where she would interact with them in chirps and head tilts. We will miss seeing her stomp after insects, fluffing her feathers, and her classic sunning behavior affectionately described as pancaking 💕

Last week the ABEF said a hard goodbye to Zilla, our resident Lanner-Saker falcon. At 22 years old, her age caused her health to decline and she was humanely euthanized. Zilla was the first ambassador to join our team in 2010.
