Dandridge earned a Lead Actress nomination at the 27th Oscars for her performance, becoming the first Black woman nominated in the category. The film, which also stars Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, Olga James, Diahann Carroll and Joe Adams, received a nomination for Scoring of a Musical Picture (Herschel Burke Gilbert) as well.
