You are not captain material. Popularity, social media following, personal runs, or wielding an MRF bat do not qualify to lead a franchise. Leadership demands authority, clarity, and the courage to make uncomfortable calls. Right now, you appear to be a captain on paper, not in presence. Last year in England, selections like Washington Sundar, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, and Jasprit Bumrah were conveniently blamed on Gautam Gambhir. That was your first series as India captain. However, you are now in your third season as GT captain. If you still do not have the conviction to tell the coach and management that certain players do not fit the playing XI, then you should step down. A captain who cannot influence team composition is only following orders, not leading a team. --- 2) The Coach Dear Ashish Nehra, A fast bowler does not automatically make a good T20 coach. Your approach feels stuck in a version of T20 that no longer exists. The game has evolved into a batting-dominant format where 200+ is routine, and no bowling unit can consistently defend modest totals on flat pitches. If you do not believe in stacking the top, middle, and lower middle order with explosive batters, then this philosophy no longer serves the team. Yes, you deserve applause for making the team champions in its maiden year and runners-up the next. But past success cannot justify present stagnation. You knew the middle order was fragile from the very first game of the 2025 season. Nothing changed. At the mini-auction, you retained players like Tewatia, Rabada, Shahrukh Khan, and even Rashid who is well past his prime. You bought Jason Holder for 7 crores and played him only after the team was virtually out of the tournament! And once again, you backed your favourites, SRK and Tewatiya against RCB last night despite widespread fan frustration! If you are unwilling to adapt, then you should step aside for someone who will. --- 3) The Owners Among all IPL franchises, you have appeared to be the most dispassionate owners. It often feels like the team exists to promote the TORRENT brand rather than to build a cricketing identity. Branding of your company is visible everywhere. Fan engagement is not. In the age of social media, GT’s presence has been the most uninspiring and dull among all ten teams. You have not meaningfully engaged fans in Gujarat or the thousands of NRG Gujjus living outside India. Because of this vacuum, many of them still support other franchises. Across the country, there is a growing perception that Gujarat Titans matches are "boring" because of the brand of cricket being played. That perception will not change without a shift in mindset. Why can we not build explosive batting line-ups like PBKS, SRH, or RCB? Why can we not build a brand aura like MI, RCB, or CSK? Why can we not involve every single Amdavadi and Gujarati? Why can our home games not consistently brim the 130K-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium? This lack of intent reflects in everything. The jersey design. The social media. The presenters. The content. The energy. Under this current mindset, the brand you hope to build will remain out of reach. ___ This letter carries the frustration of countless GT fans across the world. Please take it seriously. Very disappointed with Shubman Gill as captain right now. You can clearly see the aggressive, high-intent brand of cricket dominating today’s game, yet there’s no urgency or clear message being sent out to the team. As a captain, your role isn’t just to score runs, it’s to set the tone, demand intent, and ensure the team doesn’t fall into passive cricket. At times, it doesn’t even feel like the decisions are coming from you. Is Ashish Nehra calling the shots from the dugout??? And if that’s the case, then just say f*ck off to the captaincy if you can’t make your own calls. This approach, playing safe, taking the game deep without intent, is costing matches. Modern T20 cricket doesn’t allow that kind of hesitation. If Gujarat Titans continue like this, the blame will eventually come to you. Because at the end of the day, it’s your name next to captain.
