@paleobyliam @Tessasaurus_rex Awesome! Yeah I'll be in Wyoming for a few weeks for fieldwork. For now the plans are to do stuff just in Eastern Wyoming, but if I get near I'd drop by.

@gemmabeepo Gill was doing most of the work before Krafton intervened. And at least they stated that Gill can have Charlie and Max retain their advisory role. But it is unfortunate that they aren't getting their proper positions back.

this is only actually 1/3 of the executives that were fired. Ted Gill isn’t a game developer he was hired on later as CEO of the company so the founders could focus on game stuff and other projects. Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire who founded UWE still are not reinstated.

@MiloGaillard3 I definitely agree naming a new taxon on such material is a very bad idea.

@TheBioBob And I wouldn’t name a new taxon off of old photos, drawings, and descriptions of said bones that were destroyed many decades ago.

@Fossilcrates It doesn't help that both the dentaries and the maxillae have a medial "lip". Hence the original authors confusion.

@TheBioBob My point was that I personally think that some researchers are putting a little too much stock on illustrations, drawings, and descriptions on bones that no longer exist.

@Fossilcrates There's a similar issue with photographs and digital 3D models. Photographs distort objects because things closer to the camera appear bigger. You can turn this off in a digital 3D model, but the render will never line up with a photograph.

Oh no! Smith et al. 2006 published a photo of the Spinosaurus aegyptiacus holotype. I can’t get the pic and illustration to line up. Select the tooth and I lose the ventral ridge. Line the chin up and the posterior falls apart. Thus the Trouble with Scribbles… #FossilCrates

@JulinBayona2 This is actually just a S. aegyptiacus. S. mirabilis has a thicker crest. But for the former we just have the bases of crests, no complete ones, so we don't know how tall they were.

Since people are talking about Spinosaurus again, here's the illustration I'm working on. Still WIP, and no, it's just a S. aegyptiacus. Once the new paper is out I'll do one with an even taller crest!

@MiloGaillard3 @NatSciChannel Well, the parietal crest doesn't really look like a spinosaurid. And spinosaurid jugals don't connect to the antorbital fenestra, but have a lacrimal suture on the anterodorsal margin.

@SomniosusW @dvpaleo The anterior edge of the dentary is pretty straight even in this other photo from further away and slight posterolateral view. And the other dentary of the holotype also has a similar straight edge.

@dvpaleo Is it possible that there is distortion in the shooting angle of this Stromer's holotype photo? Because from my observation (maybe wrong), the plate from Stromer (1915) shows a very similar chin process to NHMUK VP 16421?

The very difference between Spinosaurus aegyptiacus and mirabilis is the chin process protruding beyond 1st dentary alveoli or not.

Meet Spinosaurus mirabilis. I got to see the material and skull reconstruction in the lab last year. Lots of people have been working hard on getting this described for quite some time and it's great to finally see it published.

@MitchKarajohn Believe me, we all wish we would find some more complete skulls 😂. Luckily there is stuff like Irritator, which is a close relative of Spinosaurus, and it preserved most of the skull that was missing in this one.

@MitchKarajohn The skull in the photos is a 3D printed reconstruction of the skull. The bones were found weathering at the surface of the Sahara. They were moved to the lab to be cleaned. Then the bones were scanned and a digital model was made and printed. (Photos below by the Fossil Lab)

@Melty_Leviathan Stromer's Spinosaurus and the one from Morocco are actually pretty similar. This new one was proven to be a different species. Slightly longer legs and a slightly different skull. But both hunted fish (and whatever else they could find probably).
