1/5 HELLO. Some of you might be new here. Where've you been all this time? We're Caithness Broch Project, and we love brochs! What are brochs, though? They're 40ft, multi-floored Iron Age towers, thought to be houses, found only in #Scotland. AND WE WANT TO BUILD ONE!

Dun Dornaigil, an Iron Age broch by the Strathmore River in north west Sutherland, 1920s. Brochs are drystone roundhouses found only in Scotland. This one was built at least 2,300 years ago [source: HLH Archives, D1751/2/2/11]

We don’t really know how high Mousa survived to, as it got tidied up by the ministry of works! But perhaps the tallest surviving pre-Christian building in NW Europe!
Iain Cameron@theiaincameron

The best-preserved pre-Christian building in the UK. The Broch of Mousa, on a small island in Shetland, is 2,300 years old and almost its original height. It is the most complete example of this type of building, one of 500 built in Scotland and nowhere else.

Graham responded to say "Well, yes, of course! In fact, my brother is very pally with the guy who makes the memes!" And from there, a long-term relationship blossomed - they genuinely credit CBP with helping to spark it all off. Brochs bringing ppl together after 2,000 years!

2/3 This perplexed Graham, who admitted that even some of his fellow Scots hadn't heard of Caithness. "Well, the thing is, there's this project which is HILARIOUS [editor: her words not mine] and does memes all about... Brochs. Have you heard about Caithness Broch Project...?"

1/3 - a mini 🧵 Well this is lovely. And unexpected. Bumped into Caroline from Philadelphia, & Graham, originally from Thurso. Turns out they worked together. Caroline, a big fan of solo travelling to #Scotland, approached Graham and found out he was from #Caithness...

@TheBrochProject Quite recently some of us visited the broch at Torwood near Stirling. It is still possible to imagine from the ruins how warm it could have been with fires and plenty of people inside the two layer containment.

#Caithness hasn't had a full-archaeological engagement time post for almost 20 yrs, despite possessing an embarrassment of archaeological riches! We're currently applying to funds for a FULL TIME OUTREACH OFFICER - if you can write us a letter of support, get in touch!

6/6 In the 1970s, the broch was excavated by Horace Fairhurst and David Taylor - and a mixtures of local volunteers, students and American servicemen from the local radar station - before being pushed into the sea: the broch was undercut by coastal erosion and was deemed unsafe!

5/6 A body was buried in a sitting position in the middle of an approximately circular building around the time that the site was abandoned. (Cist pictured below is just an example of one, found at Strathnaver in Sutherland - also near a broch!)
