In 1971 Tex Schramm, GM of the Dallas Cowboys predicted Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver would have NFL franchises by 1976. NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle stated “I see no use in going up there and causing problems. . . We don't want to take steps to kill off the Canadian league.”

1921 Saskatoon recruited 7 Americans but Regina still won the title. The game was ordered replayed after witnesses (a priest & a U of S professor) testified a Regina TD was out of bounds. Saskatoon won the rematch and for the first time in 11 years Regina lost the Westman Cup.

The FLQ, a Québec nationalist group, threatened to disrupt the 1969 Grey Cup and issued threats against Russ Jackson and PM Trudeau. Jackson played and Trudeau attended despite objections from his security. There were 300 riot police and snipers deployed around the stadium.

In 1978 Warren Moon was Rose Bowl MVP but signed in Edmonton saying “It was the first time in my football career when race wasn’t an issue.” At his Hall of Fame induction ceremony he said, “The Canadian people were so refreshing, so supportive of me. . . Thank you, Canada.”

@Argofans I think Damon Allen got the win in 1987. I think Warren Moon got the win in 1979 - he went in when Montreal was up 9-7 and threw a TD. There must be one more out there.

In 1930 Robert Ellis Stonewall Jackson became the first Black to play in the Grey Cup. Jackson was a train porter for CNR, which took the Roughriders to Toronto. The Leader-Post referred to him as “the dusky athlete” but by the end of the season called him a “fan favourite.”

Two black QB’s first faced each other in the Grey Cup game in 1981 — 42 years before it happens in a Super Bowl! Warren Moon and J.C Watts were the starting QB’s. And you know that happened in 1982 Grey Cup? It happened again — Warren Moon and Conredge Holloway. #CFL

#NFL In 1978 QB Warren Moon signed in @CFL because of doubts about ability of blacks to play the position in the NFL--Sunday two franchise type black QB's will play who led their teams to Super Bowl

Edmonton won the 1956 Grey Cup 50 to 27 with Jackie Parker scoring 3 TDs. After his last TD a fan ran on the field and stole the ball from Parker’s hands. The game was called as that was the last ball. 68 years later, the person who stole the ball sent it to the Hall of Fame.

In 1972 Joe Theismann wrote an article called “I’m Glad I Chose Canada.” He wrote “Playing in the Grey Cup was. . . a bigger thrill than playing in those two Cotton Bowls against Texas. I don't think anything in the States compares with the Grey Cup, not even the Super Bowl.”

@BobBurnatt In the article he actually writes that he wouldn't have got much playing time in Miami because they had Bob Griese and Earl Morrall. Of course he sometimes split playing time with Greg Barton in Toronto.

@TheCFRS He's also said Toronto was a mistake because it cost him a potential starters job with Miami. You just never know with this guy.

In 1964 Lawrence Shankman applied for an NFL franchise for Toronto. He offered to pay for a 40,000 seat domed stadium and meet the NFL requirements: 25,000 season-tickets and working capital of $1 million. The next year Toronto was one of 10 cities on the NFL expansion list.

The Grey Cup was not presented in 1909 as Lord Grey forgot to have it made. When it arrived in 1910, the shield on the trophy read “1910 University of Toronto,” but U of T won in 1909. This was fixed when the Varsity Blues won again in 1910 & a shield with the date 1909 was added

A 1921 game between McGill and Syracuse was played in Montreal with US rules to showcase the forward pass. This was the 1st forward pass by a Canadian quarterback since the 1912 Varsity Old Boys. It was almost a decade before the forward pass was accepted in Canadian football.
