@naedyu @howie_hua You did great! I just took it one little step further.... If 60 is 4/10 of something... Then 15 is 1/10 of something... So, 10 times 15 = 150!!

@howie_hua im terrible at math especially mental so id give this incorrect answer 60 is 40% of ____ which means 30 is 20% of blank (feel like this is untrue) then id say 30 times 5 is 150? so 60 is 40 percent of 150 but i dont feel like that sounds right and now i feel stupid

For today's Mental Math Monday, how would you mentally calculate this: 60 is 40% of ___?

@EDUwithEmily Our Media Center Specialist made it a competition. Class that turned in the highest percentage of overdue books earned game time in the Media Center. Was very successful!

I’m on my 5th email of telling homeroom teachers to send their students down to the library to return their books and for whatever reason they’re just refusing to cooperate…

There are a lot of math people in schools who think they are "math teachers".... they are not. They are "math tellers." And their students are frustrated.

Baseball as a metaphor for the #STAAR test: My son, a high-school junior, plays shortstop and bats leadoff for the varsity baseball team. And of course, I’m biased, but he’s a pretty good ballplayer. Soft hands, good feet, strong arm and always makes contact at the plate. 1/5

@KentHaines And... it is illegal to use any pronoun other than the standard pronoun that matches the sex on a student's birth certificate.

@KentHaines The way the law reads, no. However, the intent is to make sure that "Joe" isn't asking to be called "Maggie" without written parent approval. But because of how it reads, and potential consequences.... Margaret might not get to be Maggie either.

Collecting ideas for next year's "Math in the Hall" bulletin boards! May need to make two... also one in the classroom!
Fawn Nguyen@fawnpnguyen

This puzzle qualifies as a community one, meaning I'd have a large version of this on class wall where everyone is invited to try during transition/break times. But you can play with it on the slide I've made, just drag the numbers in. Cheers! #slide=id.g226a95d0f1d_0_693" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">docs.google.com/presentation/d…

@nebulous_nl @howie_hua @orzelc My brain makes it 40+25! Lol. For the 8+9... my brain goes to 7+10 or 10+7.... mostly 10+7.... I think I like my first number to be the "easy" number to work with.

@howie_hua @orzelc In your example of 38+27, I see 50+15. Maybe 45+20. I would absolutely not reduce the right hand term to a number that isn't a multiple of 10. For small numbers, just learn the sum. Shorthand that works for you is great. Shorthand that doesn't? Makes simple problems hard.

I’m subbing at a school and I love the kids so much. But the profanity (not out of anger, just routine conversations) is ridiculous. There are no school consequences. Looking for ideas on how to quell this.

@DingleTeach Interesting question. I prefer analog to digital. I think of time spatially. Being able to see "the space" of time having passed/remaining is more concrete to me. My daughter uses an analog timer with my grandson, who is 4. He watches the red sector grow smaller as time passes.

If you say "I'm a math teacher" three times in front of a mirror, someone will appear and tell you how much they hated math in school.
