David Richardson, head of FEMA, reportedly said he didn’t know the U.S. had a hurricane season during a meeting with FEMA staff. Two staffers said it wasn’t clear if he was joking. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security later said Richardson was joking and that FEMA is prepared for hurricane season. But doesn’t it say a lot about this administration that we can’t always tell when statements like this are meant to be a joke or are actually real?

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to rename the ship that honors Harvey Milk, a former sailor who later became the first openly gay man elected to office in California. The USNS Harvey Milk, a John Lewis-class replenishment oiler, was first named after the gay rights activist in 2016 by then-Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. The John Lewis-class oilers are designated by the Navy to be named for civil rights leaders and activists. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is the latest to admit she didn’t read the entire bill she voted for — just a week after Rep. Mike Flood made a similar admission at a town hall. In a post on X, Greene said she didn’t know about the section of Trump’s bill that strips states of the right to make any laws about AI for 10 years. ‘I would have voted NO if I had known this was in there,’ she wrote. The people representing us need to do better. And maybe Congress shouldn’t be passing 1,000-page bills in the first place.
