Daniel Kokotajlo, Former OpenAI Researcher, on Refusing $2 Million Not to Expose OpenAI: After resigning, OpenAI presented him with exit paperwork that included a clause preventing him from criticizing the company. He was told that if he didn’t sign, he would lose his equity — worth roughly $2 million, which at the time was about 80% of their net worth. He and his wife thought about it for a month, consulted lawyers, and ultimately refused to sign. “I thought that was kind of rich coming from a nonprofit that’s supposed to be for the benefit of all humanity.” The story went public, employees started asking questions internally, and OpenAI eventually backtracked. Sam Altman later said he was “embarrassed” that this was happening.
