@vtchakarova This is just clickbait doomposting. Covid was a demand collapse, the GFC was a credit-system failure, and this is a geopolitical supply shock — serious, yes, but not automatically ‘worse than both’ because someone posted a scary chart

An important read on Europe and NATO.
Melissa Chen@MsMelChen

Let’s be real here. Europe has spent decades freeloading on American security. Even now, with every NATO member finally hitting the 2% GDP target in 2025. But beyond the financial contributions, the real rupture is philosophical and the Iran crisis has shown a spotlight on it. Europe worships process. Endless committees, consultations, and “predictability.” Macron actually calls it a virtue. For Trump, this is paralysis as his style is to articulate a threat, fix a target, and act. The Americans are men of conviction and purpose. Europe on the other hand lives by bureaucratic liturgy and in high-minded abstractions. Sure, Americans might make mistakes when acting. But Europe never considers what the costs of not acting actually are. Just look at how their nations are doing on various fronts, especially on the border crisis, and you see the same cancerous rot that undergirds their foreign policy approach play out domestically. It's the same problem on a different scale. Iran is currently holding the Strait of Hormuz hostage, choking 20% of global oil and spiking prices past $100 a barrel. Meanwhile, the regime is bleeding from strikes, its nuclear ambitions are still alive despite degraded capability, and its proxies are firing missiles at allies and oil tankers. If this isn’t a clear and present danger to the global economy - of which Europe is a part - then I don’t know what is. Yet when Washington asked to use European bases to finish the job - bases the US has defended for generations, the response was hesitation and hand-wringing. The US did strike from RAF Fairford, but only after warnings that British soil could become a “legitimate target.” If you cannot agree that a theocratic regime with eschatological ambitions who have shown no restraint in hitting out at Gulf countries and threatening the world’s energy jugular is an enemy worth confronting, then what, exactly, are we allies about? Europe loves to preen about being tough on Russia. They issue condemnations and speeches and slap sanctions that hardly work to cripple the Russian economy. Now here was a chance to do something concrete: let the Americans use the bases they already pay for, help clear the Strait, and actually degrade the Iranian war machine that arms Moscow’s proxies. Turmp didn’t ask for boots on the ground or any kind of more offensive action. All he wanted was permission to operate from the infrastructure America has underwritten for decades. They couldn’t even manage that. So can you blame the Americans for seeing NATO for what it is? A paper-tiger alliance that expects Washington to bleed and pay while Brussels and London convenes and deliberates. If Europe refuses to treat Iran as the threat it is while happily letting American power keep the Strait open and the lights on, then the alliance is already dead. Trump is simply stating the obvious and the Americans are becoming very reluctant to subsidize the European delusion any longer.

Today, Google Quantum AI published a research paper that might boost the post-quantum migration. Their team has tailored Shor’s algorithm to solve the 256-bit Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem. ECDLP is the hard mathematical problem that secures ECDSA: the signature scheme underpinning most blockchains, TLS certificates, and countless authentication systems, using fewer than 1,200 logical qubits and 90 million Toffoli gates. Translated to hardware: fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, executing in a few minutes. A few minutes. Less than a Bitcoin block time. Less than two Ethereum epochs. The long-standing argument that public keys can simply remain hidden is now moot (In fact, it has always been x.com/P3b7_/status/1…). What exactly changed Shor's algorithm has been known since 1994 as a generic quantum approach to factoring integers and computing discrete logarithms. But "known" and "practical" are very different things. The real progress is in the engineering: how many qubits and gates you actually need once you compile the algorithm into a fault-tolerant quantum circuit. The last breakthrough by the INRIA Rennes team required ~2,100 logical qubit count for ECDLP. Google's engineers optimized the full circuit stack to ~1,200 logical Qubits. The recent algorithmic trendline is clear: every 12-18 months, the resource estimates drop significantly. And these are pure algorithmic gains: they compound on top of hardware improvements, which remain a major challenge. However, as of today, we're still far from having such a quantum computer. This didn't change. Zero Knowledge Proof Here's where it gets interesting. Google chose not to publish their optimized circuits. Instead, they released a zero-knowledge proof that their circuits achieve the claimed resource counts. We have no doubt they know how to do it, but no clue how (sounds magic ;-)) The reasons are likely multiple: competitive advantage, national security implications, or simply not wanting to hand a blueprint to adversaries. Regardless, it establishes a powerful (and elegant) precedent. What’s ironic: Google's ZK proof is not itself post-quantum secure. What’s next? The good news is that we already have the tools: Post Quantum Cryptography, now we need to migrate. A few days ago, Google announced it is targeting 2029 for full post-quantum readiness. NIST plans to deprecate RSA signatures by 2030 and disallow all legacy algorithms by 2035. Most organizations haven't started their cryptographic inventory. Major blockchain protocols are currently discussing the path forward. Cryptography exists to create mathematical trust in the security of systems. That trust is now being eroded, not by a working attack, but by the increasingly credible prospect of one. In security, the moment you start doubting the foundation is the moment you should be rebuilding it. What this means for blockchains For blockchain ecosystems specifically, the threat is central. ECDSA on secp256k1 (Bitcoin) and P-256 curves (broadly used elsewhere) is the cornerstone of security. Unlike traditional systems where you can rotate certificates behind a corporate firewall, blockchain migration requires coordination across decentralized, permissionless networks. This process will likely take time. I'll be diving deeper into the concrete challenges and strategies for PQC migration on blockchains and secure systems at my keynote this Thursday at EthCC conference.

We are unfortunately in the full escalatory phase of the war. Last time when negotiations were ongoing in full speed until February 27 with bullish signals for negotiated peace, the US (and Israel) attacked Iran on the day after. Now, amid the hot phase of the war, it’s similar.

UN Watch@UNWatch

🔥 BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR Rare moment of truth at the UN from brave Kuwaiti dissident @JJJuraid, invited by UN Watch: Mr. Chair, I heard the term “colonizers.” But who are the real colonizers? A Jewish Kingdom ruled in Judea for a thousand years. We, the Arabs, took this land. Who Arabized Egyptians, Phoenicians, Persians and Amazighs? It was us, the Arabs. So why does the council enshrine a lie by keeping a permanent agenda item on Palestine, while ignoring the indigenous heart of Israel returning home? Let us be clear about who is actually defending our sovereignty. Today, Israel is a fighter for peaceful nations, freeing Gaza from Hamas and saving Iranians from the Islamic Republic. What Israel is doing to the IRGC — stopping a genocidal regime from acquiring nuclear weapons — is a gift to humanity. There are 57 Islamic countries and only one Jewish state, Israel. Despite the ongoing hateful desire to eliminate it, Israel has not only survived, it has thrived. I don't believe in miracles, but this is one. So I ask the UN: when will you end the ritual of condemning Israel? Is it not time, instead, to learn from Israel? How to defeat terror, defend free societies, and pursue peace. Thank you.

I’ve been through four systemic risk-induced crises so far: GFC, Covid, Russia/Ukraine, & now this. This is by far the worst! I’m just devastated by the imagination of the global impact, the human loss, the severe poverty crisis & the political turmoil that are about to hit us.

In Margate. My cheeks are red. I am shaking. I popped into an exhibition that turned out to be the insane fever dream of an artist called Matthew Collins: ‘Drawings Against Genocide.’ The exhibition is described as ‘drawings… raising consciousness about hell…. Israel is the pure encapsulation of it. Zionism is this terror state’s ruling ideology.’ Shocked by the use of Nazi imagery - the room is full of the Star of David pasted around figures meant to be Israelis and the Jewish ‘lobby’ spewing blood, to say nothing of blonde yummy mummies wearing ‘globalise the intifada’ shirts, I spoke to the artist to share my reaction as a Jewish person. He was instantly aggressive. As soon as I started to say I was shocked and threatened by what I was seeing because it was Nazi imagery, the artist started yelling at me that I didn’t mean anything I was saying. Anytime I tried to speak (calmly) he said: ‘you don’t mean any of what you said, you’re just repeating ‘hasbarah talking points’ because ‘you’re defending a genocide’. On and on he yelled, in my face. I said: ‘if I was a Black person…’ but couldn’t finish the sentence because: ‘you’re not are you?’ On the Nazi ideology point he said: ‘yeah. Why do you think it’s there. Israel are the Nazis’. His breath was disgusting. The crowd began booing and closing in around me, making to shoe me out. I said: ‘fine, get the Jew out’ and he yelled more across the room at me, ‘repeatedly jeering ‘call the police, go ahead, call the police’. I said I would, and the community security trust, which features as a devil in his exhibition. This was met with even more jeering. ‘Yeah, call the CST’ was the last I heard before leaving. Someone snapped pictures of me while I was being shouted at. Short video shows the artist. The longer video, of our final almost surreally disgusting exchange, didn’t record.
