Yesterday we went to the hospital to visit someone who had a terrible accident. Both of his legs were badly broken, hanging up, and he had multiple injuries. The man was clearly fighting for his life. I asked him, ‘Ya jiki?’ (How are you feeling?) and he replied, ‘Da sauƙi’ (I’m fine / there’s relief). Who taught Hausa people this? Is it part of Islam or just culture? Because even when they’re seriously sick or injured, they’ll still say they’re okay. I remember one time when I was sick, my dad asked me how I was feeling and I replied, ‘Ba sauƙi’ (I’m not fine / there’s no relief). He immediately told me I shouldn’t say that.
